How to Draw a Seamless Fruit Pattern in Adobe

Illustrator
What food do you associate with the summer season? Perhaps fresh fruit and
juices? For me, the juicy fruits are juicy watermelons and fragrant oranges. Therefore,
this tutorial is inspired by the anticipation of a bright and warm summer full of ripe fruits.
Today we are going to create a colorful and stylish watermelon and orange pattern in
Adobe Illustrator. We will create two main and four additional elements and create a
pattern using the Pattern tool.

How to make a whole watermelon

Step 1
First we'll create a new document (File> New Document or Control-N) and choose the
following settings:

 Width: 500 px

 Height: 500 px

 Units: Points (or Pixels)

 Artboards: 1

 Color Mode: RGB

Step 2
Now let's start growing our delicious watermelon.
Don't forget to go to the View panel and turn on Smart Guides. Use the Ellipse Tool (L) to
make a 150 x 150 px purple circle (# 8472ce).

Select the Pen Tool (P) and a dark purple color (# 4a288c). Make three curved stripes in
the left half of our main shape.

Then copy these stripes (Control-C), paste in the same place (Control-Shift-V) and right-
click go to Transform> Reflect and flip them horizontally. Hold Shift and move them to
the right side of the main shape.
Step 3
Now let's make a semi-transparent shadow.

With the Rectangle Tool (M) create a large random rectangle. Set the Opacity to 45% on
the top transparency bar and paint it purple (# 47034c). Move it to the right side of the
watermelon. Then, while holding the rectangle and the shape of the main watermelon,
select the Shape Builder Tool (Shift-M) and, while holding Alt, delete the excess part of
the rectangle.
Step 4
Now we will make three highlights.

Select the Ellipse Tool (L) and click on the middle of the left side of the watermelon. Set
the size to 17 x 17 px and press OK (or Enter on your keyboard). Then, in the same way,
create two more 7 x 7 px circles on either side of the first circle. The color for all is pale
purple (# d6c7f9).

Select all parts of the watermelon and Group (Control-G).

How to make a slice of watermelon

Step 1
Let's see what's inside our watermelon.

Copy the previous watermelon and paste on a new layer in the Layers panel.

Make a circle the same size as the main shape of the watermelon (150 × 150 px), but
with the color # 6042a8. Place it on the watermelon.
Step 2
Make a 125 x 125 px circle and color it soft pink (# f294b6). Align it with the previous
circle using the top Align panel.

Then make a 110 x 110 px circle colored magenta (# df2754). Line it up too.

Step 3
Using the Line Segment Tool (\) create a line with no fill and no color. Place a line in the
middle of the watermelon vertically. With the three circles selected that form the inside
of the watermelon and the line (see image below), separate them using the Pathfinder
panel. Then remove all the pieces on the left side.

Step 4
Now we draw the seeds.

Make a small dark purple circle (# 4a288c). With the Direct Selection Tool (A) select the
top anchor of the circle and drag it up a little to form the seed.

Then make four more copies of the seed and place them on the right side of the purple
semicircle. This is conveniently done using the method from step 13 in another tutorial.

Also add a semi-transparent shadow on the underside of the slice. Copy its color from
the shadow of a full watermelon using the Eyedropper Tool (I).
Step 5
And now let's quickly make a piece.

Just Duplicate all the slices, Paste them into a New Layer in the Layers panel and Group
(Control-G) them.

How to create an orange slice

Step 1
Let's start with a 70 x 70 px circle colored orange (# f47a2a).

Add a 60 x 60 px circle with color # f9a03f and align it with the previous circle. Then
create a pale orange colored circle (# f9d1aa). Place it on top of the previous circle.

Step 2
Let's add the wedges.

Make a 10 x 10 px circle, colored # f47a2a. Select the bottom anchor and drag below to
form drops.

Create seven copies and place them all in the previous circle shape ( read how to do it
easily here ).
Step 3
And make the shadow as we did before with the watermelon, but set the Opacity to 30%.

How to split an orange

Step 1
Copy half of the orange to a new layer and split its shadow horizontally. Create a dark
orange colored shape (# f25d0a). Place it over half of the orange. Make some 7 x 7 px
and 3 x 3 px circles on the left side. Paint them pale orange (# f9a03f).

Step 2
Now we will make two beautiful leaves.

Use the Ellipse Tool (L) to make an oval with a light purple color (# 8472ce) and
transform its top and bottom points to form a leaf.

Draw a random dark purple colored rectangle (# 281356) over the right side of the
leaf. Remove the excess part with the Shape Builder Tool (Shift-M) as before.
Step 3
Rotate the leaf 45 degrees (while holding Shift) and place it behind the orange. Then
copy it, paste it, flip it horizontally and place a new copy next to the first sheet.

Step 4
Remove the right side of the orange skin.
As you can see in the image below, some of the small circles are missing. Drag them
over the entire shape in the Layers panel.

Step 5
Copy all the parts that make up the orange slice to a new layer. Then split it vertically
with the Line Segment Tool (\) and the Pathfinder panel as before. Delete the left side.
We now have all the elements to create our luscious, vibrant seamless pattern!
How to create a pattern

Step 1
Select all the elements and go to Object> Pattern> Make.

Set the size of the template to 500 x 500 pixels. Then place the large items as you
like. Then move the watermelon slices and oranges.
Step 2
Last but not least, add small leaves from the orange to fill in the empty spaces and
create the best composition.

When you are happy with the result, click "Finish" in the top bar.

You will now find your template in the Swatches panel.

How to apply and resize a template

Step 1
Make a 500 x 500 px rectangle colored dark purple (# 281356) for the background and
align it with the Artboard.

Create another 500 x 500 px rectangle. Select it and go to the Swatches panel
(Window> Swatches) and click on the thumbnail of the swatch you created in this
tutorial. Hooray!
Step 2
To scale the template, go to Object> Transform> Scale. Then select only the Scale
Pattern and set it to 70%.

We did it! I hope you enjoyed this tutorial and found some interesting tips in it! I'll be
glad to see your results in the comments.
