In the first year, you lay the foundation for your further studies in International Sociology. Besides introductory
courses in sociology, you follow introductory courses in other disciplines that have common ground with
sociology: political science, psychology and economics. You also learn more about academic skills and
research methods.

After choosing a specialization (Culture in comparative perspective or Social risks in a changing world) in the
second year, you follow courses related to either culture or social risks. In addition, you take several classes
in the field of methods and research, and you dive into the philosophy of science. At the end of the second
year you participate in a self-chosen sociological research project in the field of your specialization.

The third year offers even more opportunity to shape your studies according to your interests, ambitions and
talents. You have the opportunity to shape your own program by choosing courses, which further deepen your
knowledge of sociology. You can also choose courses within a different discipline of your choosing.
Additionally, in the third year you will do an internship (not mandatory when you go on exchange) that allows
you to practice your skills.

To conclude your studies, you will write a Bachelor's thesis. Both your internship and Bachelor’s

Curriculum
The first year has been designed to provide you with an overview of the different scientific disciplines offered
within the program. You will get acquainted with the disciplines of the social sciences and humanities: law,
business, economics and management, psychology and sociology, culture, history, literature, philosophy and
religion. While exploring these different disciplines, you discover what kind of academic path you wish to
pursue. Based on this experience, you will choose a major in the second year and specialize in one of five
disciplines:

BA Arts and Humanities: Past-Present-Future

BSc Business and Economics
BSc Social Sciences: Human Behavior
BA Law in an International Context
BSc Cognitive Neuroscience: Brain and Cognition

In addition to your major, you will take a minor in the first semester of the third year. The minor is a set of
courses, either in a different field than your major, giving you the opportunity to broaden your expertise. Or in
the same field as your major, to deepen your knowledge in that specific area. You can choose to follow your
minor courses abroad at one the 100+ partner universities of University College Tilburg, which many of our
students do. In the second semester of the third year you combine writing your Bachelor's thesis with two
courses, including a Professional Practice Course.
