EDI: I can read and play the F chord on a ukulele


STANDARDS: MU:Pr6.1.8, MU:Re7.2.8, MU:Re9.1.8
MODIFICATIONS: For the C and Am chords, ask TA to fret the note on the fretboard, and encourage differently
abled students to strum with their thumb or whatever fingers are most comfortable. For F and G, experiment with
fretting only one note of the chord and just playing the fretted string. Otherwise, ask TA to attempt to fret the
whole chord. Material presented verbally and visually (smartboard).

1. Give genre, title, artist, and go over the points of the gist.
2. Discussion: tempo/dynamics/instruments/adjectives.

*Set ukulele, slide #14*

1. Introduce a new way of thinking about how to read chord charts on slide #14. See the
uke, flip it upright, and just look at the top 4 spaces.
2. Go to slide #15. Ask students to come to the smartboard, and drag the pick numbers to
the correct string number at the bottom of the chord chart.
3. Now give string and fret (space) numbers, and ask students to come to the board and
drag the finger to the correct spot on the chord chart.
4. Review the C chord briefly (I play you play), then the Am chord (I play, you play). Then
do an I play, you play for both chords in one phrase.
5. Play along to “Ho Hey” (slide 17).
6. Introduce the F chord (slide 18). Challenge the class to find the fingering on their own,
and work the room, checking for placement and correcting any mistakes.
7. Do an I play, you play for F.
8. Practice switching between C and F (four strums each).
9. Set slide 19, and try the song just playing the C chord. Repeat with F chord involved.
10. If time permits, show the Bohemian Rhapsody video.
