Advisory Committee Report

This semester for our FCS 380 class, I was on three different committees in different

positions. I was part of the Field Trip, 4-H, and Adult Education committees. In each committee,

I had to use and learn communication skills and collaboration. I can definitely use more

experience and practice in this area, but the things I did learn will help me to grow and learn

even more in the future.

For the 4-H committee, I was the treasurer. This responsibility included keeping track of

the budget, which meant the expenses of each person who purchased materials. It also included

creating and turning in an invoice and making sure that each person was compensated for the

exact amount that they spent/used for the purchased materials. As the treasurer I spent about 3

hours putting everything together and making sure money went where and to whom it was

supposed to. While completing these tasks and responsibilities, I learned skills that are very

valuable not just for teaching but for life in general. I was able to put into practice what I learned

in my Money Management class about budgets. I also, in doing all these things, was able to work

with multiple people, especially Kandee from the extension office in Rexburg, Idaho.

For the Adult Education committee, I was the Vice President (VP). For this position, I

had the responsibility of helping to make sure that the curriculum packet we made for the class

was put together well. I was also in charge of making the glossary for the packet. Performing this

task helped me to learn the importance of both spelling and comprehension. For example, if you
use big words to explain other more complicated words, it will just confuse the reader more

instead of helping the reader to more fully understand the actual concept behind the words and

the words themselves. The whole process of putting together the glossary took about 45 minutes

to complete. For this committee, I was able to work with my classmates and fellow committee

members to create the curriculum packet for future Adult Educators to use and reference for their

classrooms and classes. All of this helped me to learn and practice collaboration and

communication. I hope to continue to improve and develop my skills in this area.

For the field trip committee, I was a co-president with one of my classmates (Emerie). As

the co-president I had to discuss with and make decisions about the field trip that effected both

my classmates and the people who we visited during the experience. This helped me to learn of

the importance of considering all the options and making sure that if only one person wanted to

do something that we needed to things that most or everyone wanted to do. Completing the tasks

for this position was hard, yet rewarding and took quite a bit of time and effort. While

performing my duties I also learned the importance of delegating and not trying to do everything

myself. For example, having both my committee and classmates help in contacting the different

people helped to lift the heavy load and responsibility of making sure so many things went right

and didn’t get all messed up. The entirety of the event took place over several weeks of time but

accumulated (just for my part) up to about 5 hours plus the two days for the actual field trip.

Working with so many people, including business owners, schools, the community and so

many others allowed me to have the experience of coordinating so many things all into the

period of two days. From all of these committees and this class I learned so many things that I

can and will apply to my life and career as a teacher in communication, collaboration,

responsibility, and time management.
