Abstract

English is a very important language to learn for everyone, be it students or other people because
over time English will be needed to communicate with other people both domestically and
abroad. English for an engineering student is also very important, because many references used
in English are also very important in companies, especially multinational companies. One of the
reasons it is important to master English in the world of work, be it technical or otherwise, is to
increase self-confidence during presentations or speeches. People will see us as a professional
because use an international language. As a chemical engineering student, English is also very
important because it can train our soft skills and mentality when facing multinational companies.

Introduction
English has long been known as an international language used in almost all parts of the
world. By mastering English, one has the opportunity to communicate with people from other
parts of the world. English is one of the important aspects possessed by students. Apart from
being an international language that will support communication with other people, especially
now there are many references to supporting lectures that use English. So students need to
improve their English language skills. In addition, English has become a key word that can grasp
all aspects of business, politics, social, and culture (Handayani, 2016).
As a social language of the world, English is not only an academic need because its
mastery is only limited to aspects of language knowledge but as a global communication medium
(Handayani, 2016). English is very important for engineering students, whether it is used in
college or in industry. For engineering students, English is important because there are lots of
books used in English, besides that English can be used in studying abroad, making it easier to
communicate with other students. In industry, most theories are taught in English especially in
multinational companies, technical workers must also be proficient in English if they have to
communicate with colleagues spread all over the world.
It is widely recognized that English is native languages of five countries: United States,
United Kingdom, Australia, New Zealand and Canada. However, the literature regarding the
importance of English as in Indonesia is still lacking (Rintaningrum, 2015). So it requires more
people who are concerned about how important English is especially for a student from all
majors. The process of learning English as a foreign language is different from the process of
learning English as a foreign language first or second language. Learning English as a foreign
language takes more time and involves a longer process. Lack of opportunity to learn and lack of
opportunity to use language make learners find it difficult to learn language (Rintaningrum,
2016).

Reason to learn English
a. References used in English
The course book for the Chemical Engineering study program starts from the first
semester has used one of the English languages partially and getting to the top is in total. Some
vocabulary in the material unknown lectures can be assisted by a dictionary tool. When the
implementation of speaking the language is carried out then the need to express self-taught ways
of communicating (without attention to grammar) becomes an obstacle (Ulfa & Sari, 2020). So,
that students are expected to understand and learn more in English to be able to understand the
contents of the book being studied.

b. Increase self-confidence
Self Confidence is convincing in ability and judgment (judgment) yourself in performing
tasks and choose an effective approach. This includes confidence in their ability to face
increasingly challenging environment and trust in their decisions or opinions. Student who have
high self-confidence will speak/communicate in any situation good in class or outside class. One
of indicators of someone having self-confidence, namely: readiness of a person to carry out an
activity (Amri, 2018).

c. Terms of entering the company

Most companies, especially international companies, in recruiting employees usually
have requirements that they must have the ability to speak English. The world of work is tempted
by people who are proficient in English. This skill will be of more value to prospective job
applicants because they are considered more competitive from those who are not / less proficient
in English (Fitriana, 2012). Currently, there are many job vacancies that require prospective
employees to work have English skills and even the job vacancies are written in English. This is
evidence that English language skills have become one of the important requirements for
prospective workers who will apply for jobs because the world of work is growing and
advancing in expanding its scope to cross country (Siti Yuliah, Krisna, 2016).

Conclusion
In conclusion, English is very important for chemical engineering students because some
of the books used are in English. In addition, using English either when presenting lessons or
talking to foreign students can increase the students' self-confidence. In addition, multinational
 companies usually write job vacancies in English and also recruit students who can speak
English so English is very important for chemical engineering students.
