CONNECTING WITH THE KALAMAZOO COMMUNITY THROUGH AN EVENT AT


WESTERN MICHIGAN UNIVERSITY
Inviting the Kalamazoo community to join The Chrysalis Institute at WMU’s main campus to
learn the importance and how to support BIPOC artist on November 15

KALAMAZOO, MICH. – On November 15, 2023, The Chrysalis Institute will be presenting at

Western Michigan’s Gwen Frostic School of Art. The founders will present about who they are,

testimonials from previous residents, how it can support the Kalamazoo community, and a

chance for questions.

This event will be help in Gwen Frostic School of Art from 5p.m. until 7p.m. There will

beverages and snacks after the presentation for participants enjoyment and to encourage

conversation amongst the community. This event is free to anyone but does require attendees to

November 15, 2023. This event is designed to connect and inspire everyone in the Kalamazoo

community to support local institutions that help under-represented people find their voice and

inspiration.

The presentation will focus on the interactive aspects of their Institution, including the

Milkweed Learning Hub, the in-person Chrysalis Micro-Residency and The Waystation Podcast.

They will dig deep into how each part of the program fosters self-exploration, self-care, and

contemplative practices along with previous attendees talking about their experience and time as

a resident. They will invite the guest to ask questions about diversity, inclusion, and how they

can make help the BI&POC community here in Kalamazoo. “The best way to support our

community is to foster creativity and allow the BI&POC community to speak out about their

experience!” states Alessandra Pye, a founder and current creative director of the Chrysalis

Institute, “we just want the community to understand that the BI&POC community does not get

the resources for self-exploration and expression and we want to aid their journey and foster a

community for them.”

The Chrysalis Institute is are aiming to change the BI&POC community one artist at a

time. They are giving the opportunities for the BI&POC artist community journey to self-

exploration, self-care, and contemplative practices. They use a combination of online and in

person meetings, including the Milkweed Learning Hub, the in-person Chrysalis Micro-

Residency and a podcast feature on The Waystation Podcast. They use a combination of

practices to help inspire unestablished artists.
