01 INTRODUCTION
A brief summary of the presentation
4
BACKGROUND
Traffic congestion is a problem that exists in
every country and it is brought on by a variety
of factors such as :
- Increase in the number of vehicles
- Accidents that block lanes
- Inconvenient road design
- A lack of traffic management tools
- Driver’s behavior
- Improper intersection designs

5
STATEMENT OF PROBLEM
The perspectives of the locals and transportation
experts have NOT yet been known on topics such as:

- Road intersection designs

- Smart traffic light system

- Driver’s behavior

- Different possible road policies

6
OBJECTIVE OF THE STUDY
General Objective Specific Objectives

To understand the perspectives of the - Provide the methods to renovate the

public and transportation professionals on road intersection design
intersection road design, smart technology
- Understand the feasibility of smart
applications, driver behaviour, and transport
technology implementation
policy to reduce the traffic congestion in
Phnom Penh. - Get a better understanding of driver
behavior and develop the transport
policy implications

7
SIGNIFICANCE OF THE STUDY

- Assist policymakers in crafting the

empirical findings/ideas

8
SCOPE AND LIMITATIONS
● Conducted ONLY in Cambodia

● Use data sample from road intersection in front of the Canadia

and Vattanac Towers

● Surveys will be conducted with the public and experts

23
Road Condition

Poor Road Conditions

The quality of the road will affect
drivers ability to quickly cross
intersections.

24
Road Condition

Work Zone
When there are work zone on the
road, it restrict full use of the road
leading to reduce capacity of
traffic flow.

25
Road Condition

Traffic Accident
Similar to Work Zone, traffic
accidents reduces the capacity of
traffic flow.

26
SMART TRAFFIC LIGHT DESIGN

27
Fixed-Cycle-Traffic Lights (FCTL)

For optimal capacity allocation of traffic in queues and intersections, sets of

intricate mathematical theorems and equations need to be proven to reach
the ultimate findings.

The results of those limits allow us to come up with easy-to-calculate

formulas that can help us generate near-optimal green times.

Smart Cameras for Traffic Lights Optimization

In 3600s, an average of 2651 vehicles has passed through the cycle of

lights instead of 2138 vehicles. It means that the average waiting time

has been improved immensely (Carlos W. et al., 2020).

Traffic Policies

● Policy on road enlargement

● Policy on improving public transportation

● Road pricing policy

Questionnaires for the General Public
1) How often do you use this intersection? At what time of the day?
2) How long do you commute every day? Is it fast or slow for you?

a. The design of intersection
b. Road conditions
c. Traffic lights system
d. Driver’s behaviors
e. Policy set out by the government
4) How willing are you to accept a brand-new intersection design?
5) What do you think are the impacts on your daily life that traffic congestion causes?

47
6) Do you think the current traffic lights at this intersection need to be updated?
7) Do you think traffic police officers help to reduce traffic jams?
8) For the following policies, which are you more willing to accept?
- Road enlargement policy
- Odd-even plate number policy
