THROUGH THE CONES PASSING DRILL

PURPOSE: SETUP:
Teaches players basic passing and 7 cones placed down the center of
receiving skills. the ice from one goal line to the other.
Each player gets a puck.

INSTRUCTIONS:
1. Players form two lines, one on each side of the cones.
2. Coach blows the whistle and first player in each line skate forward. Each should have a puck.
3. Player 1 passes the puck to Player 2 at the same time that Player 2 passes to Player 1. They
essentially exchange pucks. The pucks should pass between the cones, forming an imaginary “X”
shape.
4. This exchange of the pucks continues as the players skate down the ice toward the net. When they
reach the opposite goal line, both players should take a shot on goal.
5. This is a relay-type drill; when the first players reach center ice, Players 3 and 4 can begin the drill.
When the players finish taking a shot, they should skate along the boards to rejoin the lines.
6. Run the drill for 10-15 minutes.

COACHING TIPS:
• This is a great warm-up for games.
• If possible, practice this drill daily, changing up the direction of the skating or adding a
defender near the goal to change the difficulty.
• Make sure passes are going between the cones each time.
• Players should also be aiming their passes in front of their partner so they can receive the puck
in motion.

2. Make a quick stop and go into your shooting motion, holding the follow through for two seconds
3. Repeat, going to halfcourt for the second shot
4. Next set of players goes when first set leaves free throw line area.
5. After all players reach halfcourt, they turn and come back.

COACHING TIPS:
• Try having players pretend they are shooting to the right side and then the left side so that they
have to turn and square up their bodies with a pivot
• Players should land off the hop with feet shoulder-width apart, weight evenly distributed.

2. ONE HAND FORM SHOOTING DRILL

PURPOSE: SETUP:
Players work on shooting form. Players pair up and line up across from
eachother on different sides of the
lane. One player of each pair has a
basketball.

Load position,

from each other along
the lane.

INSTRUCTIONS:
1. Player with the starts by holding it out front on one hand
2. He then locks and loads into shooting position, putting the ball into the shooting pocket. The off
hand stays off the ball.
3. The player then “shoots for the stars.” He goes through his shooting motion and shoots a high, soft
shot, letting the ball go out in front of him.
4. Player holds follow-through until ball hits the court.
5. The opposite player grabs the ball and then goes through the above steps.

COACHING TIPS:
• Younger players should be practicing this drill with a smaller size ball and lower nets appropriate
for their age group
• The shot’s power should be coming primarily from the legs. Players should not need to hoist it
up using a chest-push or throw it from the shoulder.
• Wrist should be bent back in the load position so the ball is on a pedestal.
• Players should be extending their shooting arm up and forming a parachute on the follow-
through.

forward.

INSTRUCTIONS:
1. Coach says “Go,”
2. Players swing their shooting arms front to back, back to front like they are carrying a purse.
3. Players then naturally bring their hand up into their shooting pocket. Wrist should be cocked back
and hand parallel to the ground, so they are “locked and loaded.”
4. Simulate a shot, and follow through with the shooting hand forming a parachute after the release
5. Hold the follow through for a count of three, then repeat the sequence

COACHING TIPS:
• Stay in an athletic position, with feet shoulder width apart, knees bent, back straight and head
up
• The shooting elbow should be in front of the wrist and in line with the shoulder
• Many players have a tendency to push the elbow outside the body – make sure to correct this
• Raise up to your tip-toes on the release

INSTRUCTIONS:
1. Coach says “Go.”
2. Players practice their one-handed shooting motion.
3. Start with elbow against the court and bring it up in the shooting motion.
4. Hold follow-through for one second. Then retrace the motion, uncocking the wrist and bringing the
elbow back down to the court.
5. Next have one player stay on his back and another stand next to him.
6. Player who is lying down now goes through the motion with a basketball. The standing partner
catches it and returns it to the players shooting hand.
7. Players shoot the ball one-handed and focus on follow-through.
8. Continue until coach says “stop” and then have players switch positions.
9. Finally, players can shoot and catch their own ball.

COACHING TIPS:
• Elbow should be in tight against the body.
• Player should be really snapping their wrist on shot motion.
• When catching their own ball, players should focus on shooting the ball as high as they can by
getting a strong wrist snap.

INSTRUCTIONS:
1. In this drill, the player will take shots from five areas near the basket.
2. Player starts near the baseline on the right side of the basket then shoots a short bank shot, a shot
from the center of the lane, a short bank shot and then a shot from the baseline (five spots in all).
3. Drill can be run with players shooting one-handed or with the off hand as a guide hand

COACHING TIPS:
• Go slow and focus on shooting form: players should be holding the ball out in front, then
locking, loading, releasing and following through
• Try to loft the ball up with plenty of arc and backspin
• Set a goal of making five shots from each of the five spots
• Advanced players set a goal of making five swishes from each spot

INSTRUCTIONS:
1. Player shoots a one-handed free throw about five feet from the rim. She shoots until she makes it.
2. She then takes a step back and shoots a regular two-handed free throw from around seven feet
away. She shoots until she makes it.
3. She then takes another step back, to the dotted line, and shoots from around nine feet away. She
shoots until she makes it.
4. Repeat. Count how many shots it took to make it through the progression five times.

COACHING TIPS:
• Ultimate goal for players is to progress to where they are comfortable shooting free throws from
the free throw line so as they improve at the broken line they can begin to take steps back to
increase their free throw shooting range.
• Players should be focused on using proper shooting fundamentals on each free throw.
• Players should do their complete ritual before each shot.

2. She receives a from the rebounder, pivots off her inside foot, squares to the basket, then shoots a
short jumper
3. The rebounders retrieve the ball
4. The shooter runs back under the basket to the starting position, then through the short semi-circle,
this time stopping at spot #2
5. She receives a from the rebounder, pivots off her inside foot, squares to the basket, then shoots a
short jumper
6. The pattern completes, going from spot 1 to 5 and taking a short jumper from each one.
7. Then run the same drill, starting on the right block and shooting from spots 5 to 1 in descending
order

COACHING TIPS:
• Players should be pivoting off their basket-side foot to simulate catching a pass, squaring and
shooting.
• Drill should be run from both the right and left sides so that players get to pivot off each foot to
shoot.

4. Lock and load the ball for a shot, then make a pump fake.
5. Turn and spin the ball out again
6. Repeat moving all the way around the three point line to the opposite side
7. When you get around to the baseline on the other side, turn and go back around to the starting
position.

COACHING TIPS:
• Put back-spin onto the self-pass so it bounces back towards you
• Step into the shot while staying low and athletic, and put the ball right into your shooting
pocket for the shot fake
• The best shooters are able to catch the ball off a pass and go right into their shot in one smooth
motion
• Sell the shot fake by making it look like a real shot.

3. He then goes and gets the rebound. If he missed the shot, he puts it back in. Then he goes to the
back of the next line.
4. All three lines go simultaneously

COACHING TIPS:
• Always use the inside foot as the pivot foot. Some players will prefer to pivot only off the weak
side foot, but it’s important to practice with both feet
• If the pass is to the right, pivot off the left foot to square up. If pass is to the left, pivot off the
right foot to square up.
• Make sure the self-pass moves the player into their shooting range

6. Repeat moving all the way around the three point line to the opposite side
7. When you get to the baseline on the other side, turn and go back around to the starting position,
repeating the same pattern

COACHING TIPS:
• Move in a semi-circle, along the three point line, from one baseline to the other
• Younger players should run this drill from inside the three point line, roughly 10-15 feet from the
hoop
• Always pivot off the inside foot (ie. The foot closest to the basket. When moving right, use the

COACHING TIPS:
• The rebounder should collect the ball, chin it, and make a strong front turn to make the outlet
pass
• The shooter can experiment with using a front turn or a rear turn to square up. Most
importantly, he should get his shoulders square and feet balanced before moving into the shot
• You can also add variation by using a pump fake, one dribble and pull up, shooting bank shots
or driving in for layups

PRACTICE PLANS

• Players should also be aiming their passes in front of their partner so they can receive the puck
in motion.
