TURBOMACHINERY COURSE

DESIGN PROJECT: 2022‐2023

In the context of an energy recovery system to be applied in CH4 pipelines, there is the need
of designing a turbine that exploits an expansion ratio of 4 with a mass flow rate of 50 kg/s.
The inlet conditions are:

 Inlet total pressure: 4 barA,

 Inlet total temperature: 400 K
 Fluid: methane
 Total to static expansion ratio = 4

Due to a harsh constraint on the size, the turbine must exploit the counter rotating rotor
architecture.
Aiming at a design with the highest efficiency possible, it is required to:
1. Design the velocity triangles and turbine size
2. Design the blade geometry (3D Sketch included)
3. Calculate the efficiency
4. Perform a preliminary mechanical design

For all the choices done, provide a description and a motivation.

PROJECT DISCUSSION:
 Presentation time: 20 minutes  20 slides suggested
 Project is mandatory for turbomachinery A students; it is optional for
turbomachinery B students.
 project evaluation: for turbomachinery B, grades can increase up to 4 points.
 Group: max 2 persons
 At the presentation day, at least one student of the group must do the exam
