Éçopaniñad Invocation

oà pürëam adaù pürëam idaà


the Complete Whole; perfectly complete; that; perfectly complete; this phenomenal world;
pürëät pürëam udacyate
from the all-perfect; complete unit; is produced;
pürëasya pürëam ädäya
of the Complete Whole; completely, all; having been taken away;
pürëam evävaçiñyate
the complete balance; eva—even; avaçiñyate—is remaining.
The Personality of Godhead is perfect and complete, and because He is completely perfect, all
emanations from Him, such as this phenomenal world, are perfectly equipped as complete
wholes. Whatever is produced of the Complete Whole is also complete in itself. Because He
is the Complete Whole, even though so many complete units emanate from Him, He remains
the complete balance.

Éçopaniñad Mantra 1
éçäväsyam idaà sarvaà
éça—by the Lord; äväsyam—controlled; this; all;
yat kiïca jagatyäà jagat
whatever; within the universe; all that is animate or inanimate;
tena tyaktena bhuïjéthä
by Him; set-apart quota; you should accept;

mä gådhaù kasya svid dhanam


do not; endeavor to gain; of anyone else; the wealth.
Everything animate or inanimate that is within the universe is controlled and owned by the
Lord. One should therefore accept only those things necessary for himself, which are set
aside as his quota, and one should not accept other things, knowing well to whom they
belong.

Éçopaniñad Mantra 2
kurvann eveha karmäëi
doing continuously; eva—thus; iha—during this span of life; work;
jijéviñec chataà samäù
one should desire to live; one hundred; years;
evaà tvayi nänyatheto 'sti
so living; unto you; na—no; anyathä—alternative; itaù—from this path; there is;

na karma lipyate nare


not; work; can be bound; unto a man.
One may aspire to live for hundreds of years if he continuously goes on working in that way,
for that sort of work will not bind him to the law of karma. There is no alternative to this
way for man.

asuryä näma te lokä
meant for the asuras; famous by the name; those; planets;

andhena tamasävåtäù
by ignorance; tamasä—by darkness; avåtäù—covered;

täàs te pretyäbhigacchanti
those planets; they; pretya—after death; abhigacchanti—enter into;
ye ke cätma-hano janäù
anyone; everyone; ca—and; ätma-hanaù—the killers of the soul; persons.
The killer of the soul, whoever he may be, must enter into the planets known as the worlds
of the faithless, full of darkness and ignorance.

Éçopaniñad Mantra 4
anejad ekaà manaso javéyo
fixed; one; than the mind; more swift;
nainad devä äpnuvan pürvam arñat
na—not; enat—this Supreme Lord; the demigods like Indra, etc.; can approach; in front; moving quickly;
tad-dhävato 'nyän atyeti tiñöhat
tat—He; dhävataù—those who are running; anyän—others; surpasses; remaining in one place;

tasminn apo mätariçvä dadhäti


in Him; rain; the gods who control the wind and rain; supply.
Although fixed in His abode, the Personality of Godhead is swifter than the mind and can
overcome all others running. The powerful demigods cannot approach Him. Although in one
place, He controls those who supply the air and rain. He surpasses all in excellence.

Éçopaniñad Mantra 5
tad ejati tan naijati
this Supreme Lord; walks; He; na—not; ejati—walks;

tad düre tad v antike


He; far away; He; u—also; very near;
tad antar asya sarvasya
He; within of this; of all;

tad u sarvasyäsya bähyataù


He; also; sarvasya—of all; asya—of this; external to.
The Supreme Lord walks and does not walk. He is far away, but He is very near as well. He
is within everything, and yet He is outside of everything.

yas tu sarväëi bhütäny
he who; but; all; living entities;
ätmany evänupaçyati
in relation to the Supreme Lord; eva—only; anupaçyati—observes in a systematic way;
sarva-bhüteñu cätmänaà
in every living being; ca—and; ätmänam—the Supersoul;

tato na vijugupsate
thereafter; not; hates anyone.
He who systematically sees everything in relation to the Supreme Lord, who sees all living
entities as His parts and parcels, and who sees the Supreme Lord within everything never
hates anything nor any being.

Éçopaniñad Mantra 7
yasmin sarväëi bhütäny
in the situation; all; living entities;
ätmaiväbhüd vijänataù
ätmä—the cit-kaëa, or spiritual spark; of one who knows;
eva—only; abhüt—exist as;
tatra ko mohaù kaù çoka
therein; what; illusion; what; anxiety;
ekatvam anupaçyataù
oneness in quality; of one who sees through authority, or one who sees constantly like that.
One who always sees all living entities as spiritual sparks, in quality one with the Lord,
becomes a true knower of things. What, then, can be illusion or anxiety for him?

Éçopaniñad Mantra 8
sa paryagäc chukram akäyam avraëam
that person; must know in fact; the omnipotent; unembodied; without reproach;
asnäviraà çuddham apäpa-viddham
without veins; antiseptic; prophylactic;
kavir manéñé paribhüù svayambhür
omniscient; philosopher; the greatest of all; self-sufficient;
yäthätathyato 'rthän vyadadhäc chäçvatébhyaù samäbhyaù
just in pursuance of; desirables; awards; immemorial; time.
Such a person must factually know the greatest of all, the Personality of Godhead, who is
unembodied, omniscient, beyond reproach, without veins, pure and uncontaminated, the self-
sufficient philosopher who has been fulfilling everyone's desire since time immemorial.

andhaà tamaù praviçanti
gross ignorance; darkness; enter into;
ye 'vidyäm upäsate
those who; nescience; worship;
tato bhüya iva te tamo
than that; still more; like; they; darkness;
ya u vidyäyäà ratäù
those who; also; in the culture of knowledge; engaged.
Those who engage in the culture of nescient activities shall enter into the darkest region of
ignorance. Worse still are those engaged in the culture of so-called knowledge.

Éçopaniñad Mantra 10
anyad evähur vidyayä
different; eva—certainly; ahuù—said; by culture of knowledge;

anyad ähur avidyayä


different; said; by culture of nescience;
iti çuçruma dhéräëäà
thus; I heard; from the sober;
ye nas tad vicacakñire
who; to us; that; explained.
The wise have explained that one result is derived from the culture of knowledge and that a
different result is obtained from the culture of nescience.

Éçopaniñad Mantra 11
vidyäà cävidyäà ca yas
knowledge in fact; ca—and; avidyäm—nescience; and; a person who;
tad vedobhayaà saha
that; veda—knows; ubhayam—both; simultaneously;

avidyayä måtyuà tértvä


by culture of nescience; repeated death; transcending;
vidyayämåtam açnute
vidyayä—by culture of knowledge; amåtam—deathlessness; enjoys.
Only one who can learn the process of nescience and that of transcendental knowledge side
by side can transcend the influence of repeated birth and death and enjoy the full blessings of
immortality.

andhaà tamaù praviçanti
ignorance; darkness enter into;
ye 'sambhütim upäsate
those who; demigods; worship;
tato bhüya iva te tamo
than that; still more like that; those; darkness;
ya u sambhütyäà ratäù
who; also; in the Absolute; engaged.
Those who are engaged in the worship of demigods enter into the darkest region of
ignorance, and still more so do the worshipers of the impersonal Absolute.

Éçopaniñad Mantra 13
anyad evähuù sambhaväd
different; eva—certainly; ähuù—it is said; by worshiping the Supreme Lord, the cause of all causes;

anyad ähur asambhavät


different; it is said; by worshiping what is not the Supreme;
iti çuçruma dhéräëäà
thus; I heard it; from the undisturbed authorities;
ye nas tad vicacakñire
who; unto us; about that subject matter; perfectly explained.
It is said that one result is obtained by worshiping the supreme cause of all causes and that
another result is obtained by worshiping what is not supreme. All this is heard from the
undisturbed authorities, who clearly explained it.

Éçopaniñad Mantra 14
sambhütià ca vinäçaà ca
the eternal Personality of Godhead, and; the temporary material manifestation also;
His transcendental name, form, of demigods, men, animals, etc., with
pastimes, qualities and paraphernalia, their false names, fame, etc.;
the variegatedness of His abode, etc.;
yas tad vedobhayaà saha
one who; that; veda—knows; ubhayam—both; along with;
vinäçena måtyuà tértvä
with everything liable to be vanquished; death; surpassing;

sambhütyämåtam açnute
sambhütyä—in the eternal kingdom of God; enjoys.
amåtam—deathlessness;
One should know perfectly the personality of Godhead Çré Kåñëa and His transcendental
name, form, qualities and pastimes, as well as the temporary material creation with its
temporary demigods, men and animals. When one knows these, he surpasses death and the

ephemeral cosmic manifestation with it, and in the eternal kingdom of God he enjoys his
eternal life of bliss and knowledge.

Éçopaniñad Mantra 15
hiraëmayena pätreëa
by a golden effulgence; by a dazzling covering;
satyasyäpihitaà mukham
satyasya—of the Supreme Truth; apihitam—covered; the face;

tat tvaà püñann apävåëu


that covering; Yourself; O sustainer; kindly remove;
satya dharmäya dåñöaye
pure; unto the devotee; for exhibiting.
O my Lord, sustainer of all that lives, Your real face is covered by Your dazzling effulgence.
Kindly remove that covering and exhibit Yourself to Your pure devotee.

Éçopaniñad Mantra 16
püñann ekarñe yama sürya präjäpatya
O maintainer; the primeval philosopher; the regulating the destination of the wellwisher of the
principle; the süris (great devotees); prajäpatis (progenitors of
mankind);
vyüha raçmén samüha tejo
kindly remove; the rays; kindly withdraw; effulgence;
yat te rüpaà kalyäëa-tamaà
so that; Your; form; most auspicious;
tat te paçyämi yo 'säv asau puruñaù so 'ham asmi
that; Your; I may see; one who is; like the sun; that; Personality saù—myself; aham—I; am.
of Godhead;
O my Lord, O primeval philosopher, maintainer of the universe, O regulating principle,
destination of the pure devotees, well-wisher of the progenitors of mankind, please remove
the effulgence of Your transcendental rays so that I can see Your form of bliss. You are the
eternal Supreme Personality of Godhead, like unto the sun, as am I.

Éçopaniñad Mantra 17
väyur anilam amåtam
air of life; total reservoir of air; indestructible;

athedaà bhasmäntaà çaréram


atha— now; idam—this; after being turned to ashes; body;

oà krato smara kåtaà smara


O Lord; O enjoyer of all sacrifices; please remember; all that has been done by me; please remember;

krato smara kåtaà smara


O supreme beneficiary; please remember; all that I have done for You; please remember.
Let this temporary body be burnt to ashes, and let the air of life be merged with the totality
of air. Now, O my Lord, please remember all my sacrifices, and because You are the ultimate
beneficiary, please remember all that I have done for You.

agne naya supathä räye asmän
O my Lord, as powerful as fire; kindly lead; by the right path; for reaching You; us;

viçväni deva vayunäni vidvän


all; O my Lord; actions; the knower;

yuyodhy asmaj juhuräëam eno


kindly remove; from us; all hindrances on the path; all vices;

bhüyiñöhäà te nama-uktià vidhema


most numerous; unto You; words of obeisance; I do.
O my Lord, as powerful as fire, O omnipotent one, now I offer You all obeisances, falling on
the ground at Your feet. O my Lord, please lead me on the right path to reach You, and since
You know all that I have done in the past, please free me from the reactions to my past sins
so that there will be no hindrance to my progress.
