The electronic control module (ECM) is the main component of the Propel Electronic Control System. Input
and memory information is used by the Propel ECM to determine machine control parameters. The
corresponding response is made through the outputs. The ECM monitors the status of the operator inputs
(speed dial, lever, steering wheel, brake pedal, and other switches). The Propel ECM establishes the speed of
the tracks or wheels. The Propel ECM then uses the speed sensor inputs to determine whether to increase or

decrease the speeds of the tracks or wheels. Then the Propel ECM outputs to the solenoids a signal to
maintain the tracks or wheels at the operator desired speed. A display (1) on the ECM shows diagnostic and
calibration information for the Propel Control System. The inputs and outputs of the ECM are joined to the
machine harness by a connector (2) which has 40 contacts. The Propel ECM is located behind the large
hinged panel on the left side of the machine. The Propel ECM is directly above the Electronic Control
Module for the Conveyor Electronic Control System.

Note: The ECM is not serviceable. If the ECM is damaged or diagnosed as malfunctioning, the ECM must
be replaced.

Inputs
The ECM monitors numerous inputs in order to determine the status of machine conditions. The two types
of inputs are switch type and sensor type. Switches provide an open, grounded, or +V signal to the switch
inputs of the ECM. Sensors provide a signal to the ECM that changes in a proportional manner in order to
reflect changing machine conditions. The inputs are listed on the contact description tables.

Outputs
The ECM responds to decisions by sending electrical signals through the various outputs. The outputs either
create an action or provide information. The outputs are listed on the Contact Description tables.

Input/Output
The Cat Data Link is bidirectional, allowing the ECM to receive and send information. The purpose of the
Cat Data Link is to communicate with other ECMs on the machine and to communicate with service tools.
The communication permits information to be shared. The Cat Data Link is not a visible component. The
Cat Data Link consists of internal ECM circuits and the connecting harness wiring. For more information,
see the topic Cat Data Link.
