THE OPPRESSION IN EGYPT

THE OPPRESSION IN EGYPT
The Hebrews suffer the
oppression imposed on
them for centuries.

They did not rebel,

because they believed that
oppression and slavery is
the normal role for them.
THE OPPRESSION IN EGYPT
Taking advantage of the Israelites’ resignation to
their lot, the Egyptians exploit them and make
them workers in a society which does not promote
their welfare or recognize their rights.

Finally, drastic population control is imposed on

them. And oppression has become a part of human
society for many years.

PREPARATION FOR THE EXODUS

THE PREPARATION FOR THE EXODUS

By God’s providence, an Israelite

boy is saved from the drastic order
when an Egyptian princess rescue
him and adopts him as her own.
God provides further. Though the
boy is brought up as an Egyptian,
his own Israelite mother nurses him
and cares for him so he doesn’t
forget his own people.
THE PREPARATION FOR THE EXODUS

Still providing further, God has the boy brought up in

the Egyptian court as a prince so he is in a position
that enables him to talk with the king or Pharaoh.

Remember: God prepares the Israelites for the Exodus. Through the hidden
working of His providence, He chooses a person for leadership role and
place him in the center of the oppressive situation and from which he will
demand freedom for his people and at the same time, be in a position to
speak to the Pharaoh.

THE ANGER OF MOSES

THE ANGER OF MOSES
Moses reacts with anger when he
sees an Egyptian striking an
Israelite. He was already become
sensitive to the suffering of his
people. But he has yet to receive his
mission. Neither has he experienced
the greatness of God’s plan. Thus,
he does not see a solution to the
oppression of his people. And so, he
becomes angry and violent.
THE ANGER OF MOSES

By fleeing to another country and living a

threatened life, however, he begins to experience in
his own life, the condition of his people. He learns
how it is to be oppressed and he became personally
united with the anguish of his people. Although he
does not know it yet, Moses has already been chosen
by God for the deliverance of the Israelites.
THE ANGER OF MOSES

Remember:
Through Moses God provides the
Israelites hope for the future.

CHURCH TEACHINGS
CHURCH TEACHINGS

Wounded by sin, man stands in need

of salvation from God. Divine help
comes to him in Christ, through the
law that guides him and the grace
that sustains him. (cf. CCC 1950)

SALVATION HISTORY 1: OLD TESTAMENT

CHURCH TEACHINGS

The equal dignity of human persons

requires the effort to reduce excessive
social and economic inequalities. It
gives urgency to the elimination of
sinful inequalities. (cf. CCC 1947)

SALVATION HISTORY 1: OLD TESTAMENT

CHURCH TEACHINGS

Human persons are willed by God; they are

imprinted with God’s image. Their dignity
does not come from the work they do, but
from the persons they are. -Centesimus
Annus (“The Hundredth Year,” Donders
translation), Pope John Paul II, 1991, #11)

SALVATION HISTORY 1: OLD TESTAMENT

CHURCH TEACHINGS

this Council lays stress on reverence for the human

person; everyone must consider one’s every neighbor
without exception as another self, taking into account
first of all life and the means necessary to living it with
dignity, so as not to imitate the rich man who had no
concern for the poor man Lazarus. -Gaudium et Spes
(“The Church in the Modern World”), Vatican II, 1965, #27.

WHAT ARE THE WAYS TO MINIMIZE OPPRESSION?

Treat kindly the household help and
other people who have less in life
like the newsboys, collectors of used
newspapers and bottles, vendors,
waiters, salesclerk, and the like.
Many of them have been separated
from their families. They may feel
isolated, afraid, lost and mistrusted.
Often, they are blamed for every
little fault. We do much for their
self-esteem when we treat them
with respect.

WHAT ARE THE WAYS TO MINIMIZE OPPRESSION?

You could get tother with
group and work on projects for
the needy in your community.
When you give of your time
and effort or offer a helping
hand, you are following the
Christian duty of caring for
others. Furthermore, the love
and blessing that you share
with others will return to you
hundredfold in ways that God
