“Seeing the misery of the Israelites and
their unwavering faith in him, God sends
a leader to lead them to freedom. Moses
hesitates, fully aware of his inadequacies.
But because of his great faith in God, he
accepts the responsibility.”

THE MIRACLE AT RED SEA

MOSES EXPERIENCE GOD’S MERCY
God reveals Himself to Moses in a burning
bush that is not consumed. There is
mystery in the way God reveals Himself.

As Moses goes near to investigate the

mystery, a voice tells him to remove his
sandals. The removal of the sandal is way of
conveying the idea that the dust of ordinary
existence is not to be brought to the
presence of the One speaking. In other
words, when we approach God, we must
deny ourselves of our earthly concerns and
desires. This is a necessary part of salvation.
The order to remove his sandals deepens
the mystery for Moses.
MOSES EXPERIENCE GOD’S MERCY
When Moses asks for the name of
the One speaking to him, God
shrouds His name in the mysterious
answer I Am Who Am. This is a way
of telling Moses and us that God
cannot be defined; neither can His
name. This adds to the already
heightened mystery. And Moses’
reaction to the mystery is typical.
He feels overwhelmed, fascinated,
and afraid.
GOD GIVE MOSES A SPECIAL TASK
Whoever experiences God receives a task. This has been so since
the beginning of time and in Moses’ case, he is no exception. God
telling Moses to talk to the Pharaoh is the beginning of Moses’
mission in saving his fellow Israelites. But just like a simple person
Moses hesitates to accept this mission for he feels inadequate. For
him he is nobody, no money, influence, or education and he is not
a fluent speaker. But in spite of his objections God assures him
that God will be his guidance and support.

REMEMBER: God helps those whom He entrusts with a mission.

Like Abraham before him, Moses has to walk in faith.

MOSES LEADS THE

ISRAELITES OUT OF EGYPT
MOSES LEADS THE ISRAELITES OUT OF EGYPT

Through signs and wonders of God,

Moses was able to convince the
Pharaoh to release the Israelites
from their bondage (Ex. 7-12). And
so, the Exodus begins.
MOSES LEADS THE ISRAELITES OUT OF EGYPT
Before the coming of Christ, the Exodus is the
central event in the salvation of the people of
God. The Exodus tells how the Israelites were
freed from the Egyptians. But this freedom
was not given to them on a silver platter. It
was fraught with danger and difficulty
especially in convincing the Pharaoh. They
also underwent hunger and thirst, and were
threatened by wild animals. But all this
hardship is Gods’ test to the Israelites. But
they grumble, they complain, they demand
that shows their eagerness for the promise
land but they do not want to go through the
suffering and sacrifices necessary to get there.
MOSES LEADS THE ISRAELITES OUT OF EGYPT
In spite of the people’s lack of faith,
God helped them and gives them
what they need. As a Column of
clouds, He guides and shield them
(14: 19-29). He provides the manna
and the quail that serve as their
food (16: 13- 15). He gives them the
means to have drinking water (15:
23-25; 17: 1-7). He protects them from
the pursuing Egyptian soldiers (14:
5-9), from the wild beast, and from
unfriendly inhabitants (17: 8-13).
MOSES LEADS THE ISRAELITES OUT OF EGYPT

The people learn that the

difficulties they suffer is God’s test
of their faith. They learn that God is
always there for them in bad times
and good, but most especially,
when times seem bad. God helps
them and gives them what they
need and those obstacles and
difficulties are just mans of building
up their strengths to do the task
that God wants them to do.
MOSES LEADS THE ISRAELITES OUT OF EGYPT

REMEMBER: The salvation of the

Israelites was not due to any human
power. It was God’s hand and God
alone who made it possible.

THE EXODUS EVENTS AND

THE CHURCH TODAY
THE EXODUS EVENTS AND THE CHURCH TODAY

When the Israelites run out of food and

water, God intervenes and gives them
manna and quail. Twelve hundred
years later, Jesus refers to this
intervention in these words: …who
comes to Me will never hunger, and he
who believes in Me will never thirst… I
am the living bread that has come
down from heaven. If one eats of this
bread, he will live forever… (Jn. 6: 35,51)
THE EXODUS EVENTS AND THE CHURCH TODAY
The miraculous manna and water then,
foreshadow the Eucharist. Earlier in the Exodus
event we see God’s intervention when the
Israelites come upon the Red Sea. This sea blocks
their escape from the pursuing soldiers. Today,
during the Easter vigil liturgy, the Church prays:

O God, in our time we see the wonders You did

of old. As once You showed Your power by
delivering a single people from Egyptian
oppression, so now you save all the people by
the water of new birth. Grant that the whole
mankind may become sons of Abraham and
share the inheritance of Israel’s children. Amen.
THE EXODUS EVENTS AND THE CHURCH TODAY

REMEMBER: The exodus event

foreshadows our own salvation from
the oppression caused by sin, and our
slavery to sin. This salvation has been
fulfilled by Jesus Christ.

CHURCH TEACHINGS
CHURCH TEACHINGS
But for the Christians, Christ’s fundamental command
of love is dynamically linked with their rational
demands of justice. For in justice, the other person can
remain another, an alien. In love, the other is a friend,
even a brother or sister in Christ. Therefore, evangelical
love, and the vocation to be children of God to which
we are all called, have, as a consequence, the direct and
imperative requirement of respect for all human
beings in their right to life and dignity. (CFC 1190)

SALVATION HISTORY 1: OLD TESTAMENT

CHURCH TEACHINGS
At the center of all Catholic social teaching are the
transcendence of God and the dignity of the human
person. The human person is the clearest reflection of
God’s presence in the world; all of the Church’s work in
pursuit of both justice and peace is designed to protect
and promote the dignity of every person. For each
person not only reflects God, but is the expression of
God’s creative work and the meaning of Christ’s
redemptive ministry.

CHURCH TEACHINGS

The guiding principle of those in authority

should be service in the name of Christ, and
that of the members, responsibility,
obedience and respect. (PCP II Art. 20, Title IX)

SALVATION HISTORY 1: OLD TESTAMENT

CHURCH TEACHINGS

The charity of Christ is the source in us of all

the merits before God. Grace, by uniting us to
Christ is active love, ensures the supernatural
quality of our acts and, consequently, their
merit before God and before men. (CCC 2011)
