Hereditary Ending Explained

Ari Aster takes family drama to a whole new level of grief and trauma in the
psychological horror film Hereditary. It’s so disturbed and ominous it became
one of the most unsettling films of the last decade. At first glance, what seems
to be a normal problematic family melodrama, turns into a dreadful and
complicated scenario in awe of an explanation.

Before we try to untangle the twisted ending of Hereditary, lets recap briefly
what happened. Peter was possessed by the cult led by Ellen, Annie’s mother, to
incorporate Paimon, who is hailed by the followers as one of the Eight Kings of
Hell. Joan and the other people who worship the devil, believe that he can come
to the world and become stronger by inhabiting a healthy male host, only.

Peter’s parents were beheaded and placed in a position of worship, and now
Peter is called Charlie, since he also has his sister’s spirit. At the end of the film,
Charlie is told that the whole Trinity was destroyed and that Paimon finally
reigns.

One of the characteristics of Paimon is the appreciation for art, which may
explain the relationship and talent shared between Annie and the daughter,
Charlie, with sculpture and painting. These characteristics could also be
considered, as the title of the film indicates, hereditary.

Annie presents an important hereditary condition where she suffers from severe
sleepwalking, just like her mother, which almost caused her to kill her own
children. The supernatural is also manifested within the remaining characters
mental disorders.

After Ellie’s funeral, in a group therapy session, Annie reveals the family’s history
of mental illness: she tells that her father suffered from “psychotic depression”
and died of starvation when he stopped eating; her schizophrenic brother was
found hanged, and her mother suffered from multiple personality disorder, wich
became even more intense near her death.
This also explains why Annie manages to speak with the voice of Charlie, after
her daughter’s death; an indication of identity dissociation.

Returning to the beginning of the film; after Ellie’s death, Annie finds a letter
written on morning before her passing. In the letter, she apologizes for
everything she could not tell, guaranteeing that “our sacrifice will be little pale
next to the reward”.

Annie also finds a book of incantations in one of her mother’s boxes, said book
has the same symbol on Ellie’s necklace used in the funeral. The book has a
passage marked explaining how to successfully conjure Paimon.

The ending of Hereditary reveals that Ellie, as leader of the cult, has been
manipulating her family for generations to eventually alow Paimon to take over
a male host, Annie’s son.

Writing about TV/Movies has been my dream ever since I was 11 (I’m 24),
watching Angelina Jolie being interviewed for her role in “Girl, Interrupted”. It
sounds clichê, but is everything I have ever dreamed of, and that is why I became
a journalist. I’ll do anything to fulfill that dream.
