(3) In determining the periods of study relevant for meeting the deadlines prescribed under
these examination regulations, extensions and interruptions of periods of study shall not be
taken into account insofar as they are
1. by participating in committees of an institution of higher education, a
student body or a student union provided for by law or by the articles of

to study in the degree program Diploma in Fine Arts only after passing the aptitude test at
t h e Mainz University of Art and Design.

II. Basic and main studies

§6
Content of the study
(1) The content of the study program is artistic work. For details see § 7 par. 2 to 7.
(2) The course of study takes place in artistic classes and is largely to be planned by the
student according to his or her own individual ideas and requirements.

§7
Structure of the study
(1) The program consists of four semesters of basic studies and five semesters of
advanced studies, including the time required to take the diploma examination.
(2) For orientation purposes, the basic studies begin with a two-semester course of study in
the basic class, in which the student familiarizes himself or herself with the fundamentals of
artistic work. This includes active participation in an artistic or technical exercise (nude
drawing or workshop courses) as well as active and successful participation in at least one
course of at least 2 SWS either from art-related theory or art history. Proof of both must be
provided for admission to the second semester examination. The study in the basic class is
completed with the second semester examination.
(3) In the second part of the basic studies, students continue their studies in a specialized
artistic class. Passing the second semester examination is a prerequisite for studying in an
artistic specialist class. As a rule, the student must prove that he or she has actively studied
in an artistic specialist class for at least two semesters during the basic studies. Proof of
active participation is provided by t h e certificate of the subject class instructor.
(4) In the course of the basic studies, students must complete, in addition to the courses
mentioned in paragraph 2, two further courses of at least 2 SWS each from the areas of art-
related theory or art history, as well as one further course of at least 2 SWS. The further
course can either also be chosen from the areas of art-related theory or art history, or in art
didactics or in another subject of the JGU, provided that a justified reference can be made by
the student to the examination board. Active and successful participation in these courses
must be proven for admission to the intermediate diploma examination.
(5) As a rule, the basic studies are completed after the fourth semester with the pre-degree
examination. Passing the intermediate diploma examination is a prerequisite f o r studying in
an artistic subject class in the main study period.
(6) The main study period serves to deepen the knowledge and skills acquired in the basic
study period and to develop an independent artistic approach to the work. As a rule, the
student must have studied at least four semesters in a specialized artistic class during the
main study period.
(7) In addition, each student has to take at least two further courses in the course of the main
studies, each of at least 2 SWS, from the fields of art-related theory, art history or art
didactics, as well as a

8
further course of at least 2 SWS must be completed. The further course can either also be
chosen from the fields of art-related theory, art history or art didactics or in another subject of
the JGU, provided that a justified reference can be made by the student to the examination
board. In addition, active participation in an artistic or technical exercise (nude drawing or
workshop courses) must be proven. In the course of the main course of study, the student
takes part in an excursion lasting several days, usually offered by a leader of an artistic class.
Proof of active participation in the excursion is provided by a certificate from the teacher who
offered the excursion. For admission to the diploma examination, active and successful
participation in the courses as well as active participation in the excursion must be proven.
(8) The main course of study is usually completed in the ninth semester with the diploma
examination.

§ 7a
Participation and attendance
(1) Students may only be required to attend courses as a prerequisite for examinations in
accordance with § 26 Para. 2 No. 7 HochSchG if this is necessary in order to achieve the
learning objective of the course. Courses for which regular attendance is compulsory are the
artistic-technical exercise according to § 7 par. 2 and 7 as well as the excursion according to
§ 7 par. 7. Attendance at a course must still be confirmed if the student has missed up to
three individual courses, but no more than 20% of the course time. If the permissible
absence time is exceeded for reasons for which the student is not responsible, the course
administration will decide, upon informal application by the student and taking into account
the circumstances of the individual case, whether it is possible to compensate for the
absence time in order to still achieve the learning objective.
(2) Active participation includes the preparation and follow-up of the course as determined
by the course instructor and active participation in the course. The conditions for certifying
active participation in courses and exercises are announced by the respective lecturers at
the latest at the beginning of the lecture period of the respective semester. The type and
extent of active participation shall be limited appropriately.
(3) Active participation in studies in the artistic classes is certified by the class instructors at
the end of the semester. Study in the artistic class includes, for example, studio study,
plenaries, colloquia, individual work discussions or corrections (individual instruction), and
the development of individual or group artistic projects.
(4) Prerequisite for the proof of successful participation in a course of art-related theory, art
history or art didactics is the active participation in the course according to paragraph 2 as
well as the achievement of a course achievement according to appendix 1.
(5) The conditions for the proof of active and successful participation in a course of another
subject of the Johannes Gutenberg University (JGU), provided that a justified reference can
be made by the student to the examination board, are regulated in Appendix 1 No. 3.

III. General regulations for testing
§8
Default, resignation,
Deception, breach of order
(1) An examination performance shall be deemed to have been assessed as "failed" if the
candidate fails to appear at an examination date without valid reasons or if he or she
withdraws from the examination without valid reasons after the examination has begun. The
start of the diploma examination is considered to be the issue of the topic of the final thesis.
Examinations are also considered "failed" if the candidate has not taken them within the
prescribed time limits. The same applies if an artistic-practical examination performance is
not completed within the specified processing time.
(2) The reasons asserted for the failure to attend or the withdrawal in accordance with
Paragraph 1 must be notified to the Examination Committee in writing without delay and
must be made credible. If the examination board recognizes the reasons, a new date will be
set. In this case, any examination results already available shall be credited. If the candidate
misses or withdraws from the examination due to illness, this must be evidenced by a
medical certificate. The candidate must submit the medical certificate to the Examination
Committee immediately, i.e. without culpable hesitation, at the latest by the third day after the
examination date. If the candidate is unable to take the examination for the first time, a
simple medical certificate without further details is usually sufficient, which only certifies the
inability to take the examination from a medical point of view. In the case of a repeated
occurrence, the submission of a qualified medical certificate, which certifies the time of the
medical treatment, type, extent and duration of the illness as well as its effects on the ability
to take the examination, or a medical officer's certificate without this information, may be
required. An obligation to state the medical diagnosis is not permitted. The illness of the
candidate shall be deemed equivalent to the illness of a child or relative in need of care for
whom he or she is predominantly responsible on his or her own. If reasons are recognized, a
new date will be scheduled. In this case, the examination results already available are to be
credited.
(3) If the candidate attempts to influence the result of his or her examination performance
by deception or the use of unauthorized aids, or if the declaration pursuant to Paragraph 5
proves to be untrue, the examination performance in question shall be deemed to have been
assessed as "failed". A candidate who disturbs the orderly conduct of the examination may
be excluded from the continuation of the examination performance by the respective
examiner or invigilator; in this case, the examination performance in question shall be
deemed to have been assessed as "failed". If the candidate is excluded from further
performance of the examination, he or she may request that this decision be reviewed by the
examination board.
(4) The decisions according to paragraphs 1 to 3 are made by the examination board.
Rejecting decisions of the examination board are to be communicated to the candidate in
writing without delay, reasons are to be given and an appeal notice is to be provided. The
candidate must be given the opportunity to comment.
(5) In the case of artistic-practical examinations, the student must enclose a written
declaration that the work was developed and produced independently. In the case of written
examinations, with the exception of written examinations, the student must submit a written
declaration that he or she has written the work independently and has not used any sources
or aids other than those specified. The examination board is entitled to check written work for
deception and attempted deception, also with the aid of electronic means. For this purpose, it
may request the author to submit a suitable electronic version of the work within a
reasonable period of time. If this request is not complied with, the work may be graded as
"failed".

be
(6) The provisions of paragraphs 1 to 5 shall apply accordingly to study achievements.

§9

disadvantages in order to maintain equal opportunities. If the candidate can credibly
demonstrate that he or she is unable to complete all or part of a course of study or
examination in the intended form due to a prolonged or permanent physical disability or
chronic illness, this disadvantage must be compensated for by appropriate measures, such
as an extension of the processing time or a different arrangement of the examination
procedure. The nature and severity of the burden must be demonstrated by the candidate to
the examination board in good time by submitting suitable documents, in the case of illness
by submitting a medical certificate. In cases of doubt, an official medical certificate may also
be required.

Opportunity Officer of the University of the Arts and, at the request of students with
disabilities or chronic illness, the Representative for the Interests of Students with Disabilities
or Chronic Illness may attend examinations that include an examination interview or
presentation.

justified written application by the candidate, which must be submitted no later than four
weeks after completion of the repeat examination and receipt of the notification of failure in
accordance with paragraph 5. The time limit for the second repetition of the examination is
