Brief Introduction to Arabian Nights

 The tales in the Thousand and one nights are set in the Middle East, especially in Egypt, Baghdad
(now the capital of Iraq), and Persia (now Iran).
 Arabian nights is a collection of unrelated stories pieced together in a long narrative.
 The connecting framework is the tale of King Shahriyar, whose wife's betrayal has filled him with
hatred for all women.
 A young woman named Scheherazade together with her sister Dunyazade devises a scheme to
stop the bloodshed. Scheherazade Weds the king, and on the first night of their marriage she
tells him a spell binding story.
 By telling stories to king Shahriyar, Scheherazade prolonged her life, for One thousand and one
nights.

Genre, type of literary and Structuralism

I am Apple Mie B. Lu, and I am going to tackle about the types of literature……..

Genre / type of literature: Fantasy fiction.

“The type of literature or the genre of the 1001 nights: the fisherman and the jinni is fantasy fiction, it
has characters set in an imaginary universe, like the Genie and it is inspired by folklore.”

Lesson / values: "Treat people how you wish to be treated"

“When it comes to the moral or the lesson, we can say that it is about treating people the way we want
to be treated. I am sure that most of us are familiar with the saying that goes "don't do unto other what
you don't want others do unto you" in the story the genie did bad things toward other people and
threatened the fisherman but at the end he was the one begging to be freed . he pays the prize of doing
bad things to others.”
“Is the fisherman and the jinni a structuralism? in structuralism a piece is open to interpretation. It
depends on how the reader views the text. Just like how we perceived the moral of the story. The part
where the fisherman tricked the jinni can be interpreted in different ways like "we should not trust
people we don't know" or "we should not say bad things to others if we don't want those things to
happen to us" hence the storythe fisherman and the jinni is open ended and is open for interpretation.”

Characterization/setting

Plot

“Thank you Ms. Irinco, once again, I am Marian A. Gabas and now I will be discussing the plot and plot
diagram it is compose of five parts the exposition, rising action, climax, falling action, and resolution.”
For the exposition……………

 A fisherman goes to fishing to support his wife and their three children.
 He always cast his net four times a day. On this particular day he is not having a good catch. On
his first cast was a donkey's carcass. His second cast he caught a pitcher with mud. The third cast
was filled with potsherds and broken glass pieces. On his last cast, he caught a bottle made of
yellow copper sealed shut.
 The fisherman opened the jar, then comes out a jinnee. The jinnee threatened to kill the
fisherman.
 Desperate, the fisherman develops a plan. Aloud, he doubts that the jinni could have fit in the
pot, considering his immense size. The jinnee shows him that he fits, and as soon as the jinnee
went inside, the fisherman immediately shut the lid, trapping inside once more.
“The jinni is once again inside the jar, and because of it he begged the fisherman to free him.
Now the tables have turned, the fisherman remembers a story that resembles the jinni’s
situation, and that story is the Tale of king Yunan and Duban the Doctor. To give you a brief
background on the story…………….

“It is about a wise healer named Duban who healed King Yunan's leprosy, but Yunan's vizier
convinces the king that Duban is out to kill him. Yunan has Duban executed on that suspicion,
and Duban gifts him a magic book before he dies. After Duban is beheaded, the king flips
through the book, and then dies himself from a poison that Duban has left on its pages.”

 The fisherman threatens to throw the jar back to the sea and leave it to perish.
Conflict and Point of view

“Good evening everyone I am Dianarell C. Navarr, and I am going to tell the point of view of the
story………

Conflict

 The Jinni tried to kill the Fisher upon freeing him from the jar.

Point of view

 The story of the fisherman and the Jinni is in third person point of view.
