(ii) In the solid state, the tons are strongly attracted to one another and hence are not free to move. Therefore, in the solid state, ionic compounds do not conduct electricity. However, in fused (molten) state or in aqueous solution, the ions are free to move and hence conduct electricity. (iii) In accordance with the general principle of Like dissolves like’, ionic compounds being highly polar are soluble in polar solvents like HO but are insoluble in non-polar solvents like benzene, CCly, CS, etc. (iv) Since electrostatic forces of attraction act in all directions, therefore, ionic com- pounds do not possess directional charac- teristics and hence do not show stereoisomerism. (v) In aqueous solutions, ionic compounds form free ions which readily undergo ionic reactions. For example, Na* CI” (aq) + Ag+ NOF (aq) —> AgCl (s) + Nat NO (aq) Scanned with CamScanner
