CVE 313: Reinforced Concrete Design
Prof. Tabsh HW# 9

Problem 1:
A tied column with hollow circular cross-section has an outside diameter of 750 mm and
inside diameter of 250 mm, and is uniformly reinforced with 16 No. 20 bars. If the
column is subjected to concentric axial load in compression, compute the maximum live
load that can be applied on the column together with a 1000 kN service dead load.
Given: f’c = 25 MPa (N.Wt.) and fy = 460 MPa.

16No. 20

3@250 mm=750mm
Problem 2:
Design a tied column with a square cross-section such that the gross reinforcement ratio
is about 2%. The column is subjected to PD = 1500 kN and PL = 2000 kN at its center.
Determine the dimensions of the cross-section and design both the longitudinal steel bars
and ties. Given: f’c = 35 MPa (N.Wt.) and fy = 460 MPa. Assume interior exposure.
