‭PROCEDURE‬
‭Introduction‬ ‭Time‬
T‭ oday we’re going to work on what makes a good ending, so I’m going to start by telling‬
‭you a story, listen for the ending.‬

‭Tell them a story that ends poorly‬

‭-‬ “‭ One afternoon I decided I wanted to bake a cake but I realised I had no‬
‭ingredients for it, so I needed to take a trip to the grocery store. So take a‬
‭trip I did, I got in my car and raced to the store. When I got to the grocery‬
‭store I couldn’t help but imagine the cake I was going to bake. Pillowy vanilla‬ ‭5‬
‭sponge cake with sweet and tangy strawberry icing between each layer. I‬
‭could practically taste it already.‬
‭-‬ ‭“ This is going to be the most scrumptious cake to ever exist,” I thought to‬
‭myself, practically drooling. I had almost all the ingredients I needed: flour,‬
‭strawberries, milk, and more, the last thing I needed was eggs. However, the‬
‭grocery store was out of eggs, so I didn’t make the cake. The end.”‬

‭-‬ ‭ask what their thoughts on the story was‬

‭-‬ ‭“What did you think about the ending?”‬
‭-‬ ‭Was this a good ending to my story? Does it resolve my story?‬
‭-‬ ‭What happened to my cake making adventure?‬

‭Body‬ ‭Time‬
“‭ An ending is not just where the text stops. The ending of a story needs to wrap up or‬
‭resolve the story in a natural and satisfying way. Interesting endings are in the moment”‬
‭-‬ ‭“what do I mean by ‘in the moment’?”‬
‭-‬ ‭“when people say they ‘are in the moment’ or ‘enjoying the moment’ what‬
‭does it mean?”‬
‭-‬ ‭It means they are present in both the place and the time that the‬
‭moment is happening‬

*‭ change slide and hand out anchor chart, have them fill in the boxes with where and‬
‭when*‬
‭-‬ ‭“one way to make sure an ending is in the moment is to pay attention to the time‬
‭and place that your story ends in while you are writing it”‬
‭-‬ ‭“What was the point of your story? To be in the moment, your ending needs to‬
‭wrap up that point. That’s why it’s telling you to stay in the time and place of the‬
‭story.”‬

*‭ hand out mentor text*‬

‭15-20‬
‭Read the mentor text and just have them listen, tell them to listen specifically for how it‬
‭ends, does the author talk about when and where she was when it ended, did it end in a‬
‭different time and place than when the story began?‬

‭-‬ a‭ fter, have them get together with their writing partner and discuss the ending, tell‬
‭them I want them to discuss the questions:‬
‭-‬ ‭“What did you like about the ending?”‬
‭-‬ ‭“How did they wrap up the story?”‬

‭ n example of a story idea and a good way to end it would be:‬

A
‭A story about falling off your bike while riding home from school.‬‭The possible ending‬
‭would be limping home while pushing your bike.‬

‭ ow I’m going to have you guys fix my story and make the ending better. You’re already‬
N
‭with your writing partner, use a white board and workshop a better ending to my story.‬
‭-‬ ‭after they will share the endings they made for my story‬

‭Closure‬ ‭Time‬
‭Take out your writing notebooks, find the story you’ve been working on.‬

I‭ want you to write 3 different endings for your stories. Write endings for your stories that‬
‭15‬
‭are in the moment that your story takes place in. Wrap up the point of your story. You know‬
‭your ending is in the moment if it is not abrupt, and if it wraps up and resolves the story.‬

‭With a few minutes left have them share their endings with an elbow partner,‬
‭-‬ ‭Ask your elbow partner which is their favourite.‬
‭-‬ ‭Choose your favourite ending and share with the class.‬
