Agriculture.
Why are the farmers important?

Farmers are an important part of the survival of our

various societies because they provide food and
fiber that nourishes and cloths us. They make
responsible use of natural resources and utilize
both primitive and very advanced technologies to
accomplish this. They have the ability to deal with
varied growing seasons, climatic variations, soil
conditions, and the often harsh catastrophic events
of wildfire, drought, and floods.
What is the condition of the farmers?
The poor farmers without a farm live a truly miserable
life. They work on daily wages on the farms of others
as their farms are not in a condition to earn the money
for them. Their wages are too low. They belong to the
class of have-nots, although they are the very backbone
of our agriculture.
What is the reason behind the condition?
 The weather in India these days has become erratic at best and rainfall does not happen at the
right time.
 Soil erosion is also a major problem faced by farmers.
 Real estate prices have gone up to such a level that people are finding it hard to buy a home as
it is. Majority of the people who have their own land to till have got it from their ancestors.
Since more often than not, after the death of a farmer his land is divided among his sons, it
leaves precious little for a farmer. This is the reason that the scale of operations here is so
small.
 These days farm labour is regarded as demeaning, especially casual labour. Sectors such as
construction and industries are already employing people, who would otherwise be engaged
in agriculture.
 One of the most crucial problems faced by farmers in India is regarding marketing. The laws
in India are outdated and most often a farmer has no option but to sell his produce in
regulated markets, where the middlemen are the ones making the maximum gains. At times,
they can make up to 75% profits. If the middlemen can be eliminated then the farmers could
have sold their products at better rates.
 A research estimates that each year 30-40% of the entire agricultural produce in India is
damaged because there are not enough cold storages. In monetary terms, this translates to
INR 35,000 crore.
 Farmers in India have to often make do with poor quality seeds. There are many reasons for
this sorry predicament – ignorance on part of farmers, corruption of officials, ineffective and
What is the effect of the condition on farming?
 Farmers are forced to suicide in the case of crop failure and
loan burden.
 Many farmers are discarding farming and are working as
labours in the cities.
 76% farmers want to give up farming, shows study.
 They are forced to sell their farms to multinational
companies at very less cost because their land has become
barren.
How can the condition could be improved?

 They need to be educated about various facets of farming.

 Centres of excellence need to be set up to help them.
 Insurance is needed.
 Landholdings should be consolidated.
 Organic manure should be used.
 Mechanization is needed.
 Direct provision of capital to farmers by government.
 Encouraging integrated, contract, and cooperative farming.
 Developing water sheds.
What could be done by a common man?
 Buy products from the farmers directly, instead of buying from the grocery
stores, and department stores.
 If possible help them set up a temporary shop in a hand pulled cart, in
residential colonies nearby, where they can come on a regular basis, say
weekly once or twice, and sell their products directly to the consumers.
Doing so, the farmers would be able to sell the products at a higher price,
and the consumers would be able to purchase fresh products at a somewhat
cheaper price.
 Many farmers are illiterate and hence are unaware of the benefits they
provided with, by the government through the rural banks and co-operative
banks. Enlighten them regarding these, help them fill the forms and get the
government benefits to them directly without the involvement of any
middlemen. Thereby they would not be trapped by the money lenders who
charge criminally high amount of interest rates, which is the primary
reason for the depression & suicides in many farming families.
