ABSTRACT
Experirnenthas been done to assessthe effect of heatexposureon the percentageof'
dead spemrand py|ilbnn cells in male NZw rabbits. The bucks were exposedto 34oC for 8
h for either I or 5 days. It rvas found that scrotal temperature (ScT) increasedvery rapidly by
4"C during the first h ofcxposure in group I (lx8h). In group 2 (5x8h of exposure),ScT
differed significantly between days (P<0.05). The biggest responsewas on the first day
(36.6'C) followed a progressivereduction,day by day, in an apparentacclimationpattern.At
different tirnes of exgnsure,ScT was observedto rise rapidly during the first hour (by l4
percentor -1.,1'C)-In the lx8h treatment, dead sperm achieveda maximum level of 1,1.5+
4.7 (%)in the llrst week after hot-room treatment. In week 2, thc percentage dead sperm
started to decline. When rabbits were exposed to 5x8h, they were affected more severely
than the lx8h. In ucck l, the percentagedead spenn in the 5x8h group was 2.1 fold greater
than in the lx8h group (31.0% vs. 1,1.5%).Recoveryin the 5x8h group took longer than in
the 1x8h group. and the percentageofdead sperm finally returnedto normal levelsonly after
7 weeks, compared to 5 wecks after lx8h treatment.Bctween $eeks. the incidence of
pyriform cells did ditler significantly (P<0.05). In the lx8h treatment, the percentageof
pyrifonns incrcasedin the first week by 3.8 percentafter hot-room exposure. In week 2. the
percentagepyrilbnlr staftedto decline and continuedto do so graduallyuntil week 6. In the
5x8h treat[lent.the numberof pyrifbnrs was higher than it was in 1x8h treatr.nent. In week
I . for example. the percentagepyrifonn was I 6 percenth igher than in I x 8h treatmentgroup.
Hence.the mcan pr'rilirnn cell count was l 6 times higher in the 5x8h comparedto the lx8h
group.
