A. Chosen Biomolecule:

PROTEIN - is one of the indispensable class of biomolecules, which makes

up 50% of the cells dry weight. Proteins are critical for cell function and is
responsible for the structure, function, and regulation of the body's tissue and
organs (Dr. Brody, 2022). Defined by the Merriam Webster dictionary as any
of various naturally occurring extremely complex substances that consist of
amino-acid residues joined by peptide bonds, contain the elements carbon,
hydrogen, nitrogen, oxygen, usually sulfur, and occasionally other elements
(such as phosphorus or iron), and include many essential biological
compounds (such as enzymes, hormones, or antibodies).

In terms of these biomolecules role, proteins fundamental role is to act as an

enzyme or catalyst for maintaining chemical reactions within the body. Protein
as an enzyme accelerates the rates of such reactions by well over a million-
fold, so reactions that would take years in the absence of catalysis can occur
in fractions of seconds if catalyzed by the appropriate enzyme (Cooper, GM.,
2000). Another role of protein is to regulate gene expression. Gene
expression is a process where protein and protein volume is controlled.
Genes encode proteins and proteins dictate cell function. Therefore, the
thousands of genes expressed in a particular cell determine what that cell can
do (Nature Education, 2014). Comprising the overall structure of major cells is
another role that the protein does. Through its 4 levels of structure being
primary, secondary, tertiary, and quaternary (Cooper, GM. 2000). Boosting
and regulating the immune system is another function of the protein. As
protein's specific amino acids to animals and humans with malnutrition and
infectious disease enhances the immune status, thereby reducing morbidity
and mortality (Li et al., 2007).
