NARRATIVE REPORT: FOR THE PERIOD: December 5-11, 2023

Intern: Cubao, Jay Mark Track: Education

Internship Training Site: Department of History
Internship Supervisor: Professor Celyn Teatro

INTRODUCTION
This month, I was tasked by Ma'am to proctor all of her classes to fulfill my required
hours for on-the-job training (OJT). In order to complete the 140 hours needed, I
successfully conducted all six class examinations and checked all the papers. I ended up
accumulating 143 hours in total. I had the opportunity to reconnect with some of my former
classmates, as this time I was their proctor. I couldn't have achieved this without the
excellent guidance and consideration of Ma'am Celyn.
WEEKLY INSIGHTS
Week 1: December 5-8, 2023
This week, I was tasked with proctoring all of Ma'am Celyn's class examinations.
On December 5, I proctored my usual classes, and on the 7th, I proctored Ma'am's
Monday-Thursday classes.
On December 5, I conducted the exam exactly at 10:30. Ma'am gave me some
instructions before distributing the test papers. First, I had to ask the students to arrange
their chairs one set apart and put their answers on a single yellow sheet of paper. After
giving these instructions, I explained the different parts of their exams and how they
should answer them. Then, I distributed the test papers. Unlike the last examination, this
time there were no essay questions; it consisted entirely of objective-type questions since
the number of students was limited. After an hour and a half, I collected the papers. I
followed the same procedure for my 3:00-4:30 and 4:30-6:00 classes.
On December 7, I proctored Ma'am's other classes. This time, I felt a bit tense and
anxious as this was my first interaction with her students. The first class I had to proctor
was from 7:30-9:00, so I had to go to IIT as early as possible. To my surprise, some of
these students were my former classmates from high school. The same thing happened
in the next class from 9:00-10:30, where I met some former classmates, especially in the
last class from 3:00-4:30, where I even encountered a close friend whom I greeted.
On the 8th, I began checking the papers at 10 in the morning and finished at 12,
then continued in the afternoon. This time, I had the chance to check all the items since
they were objective-type questions. However, it was a bit tiresome checking all 75 items.
I'm not complaining, but it's just as Ma'am told me that checking papers is one of the most
tiresome tasks for teachers. Nevertheless, I successfully checked the test papers from
the four classes and will continue on Monday for the remaining two.
Week 2: December 11
So, today marks my last day as an intern under Ma'am Celyn. I checked the two
remaining classes, then I went to Ma'am to have my Daily Time Record (DTR) signed.
After she signed it, I headed home. On the way home, I reflected on my time during the
internship. I met many new faces and had the chance to catch a glimpse of what it looks
like to be a teacher, understanding how teachers perceive and interact with their students.
I am thankful for this experience, and I don't have a single regret about enrolling in
the education track. Perhaps part of the reason for all the happiness was being under the
guidance of Ma'am Celyn. She allowed me to be myself during my time in front. Of course,
I've learned a lot from Ma'am, both about being an educator and about life.
Life threw obstacles in the way of my dream to become a teacher, but it also
provided reasons to pursue that dream. It might be a little blurry at this time, but I believe
in what my heart tells me, and that is to become a teacher.
Key learnings
As this month marks my last in the internship, I have gleaned numerous lessons,
ranging from organizing activities to conducting exams. My time during the internship was
brimming with happiness. I had the opportunity to engage with the students, who gave
the same respect and treatment as they offered to Ma'am. Together, we shared laughter
as our discussions goes beyond into real world scenarios and personal experiences.
I learned how to create a comfortable atmosphere around the students during
exams while also balancing the necessary strictness required for proper proctoring. There
were moments of pressure, particularly when faced with questions from students to which
I didn't immediately know the answers. However, I persevered and successfully
conducted proctoring sessions. The process of checking test papers brought a realization,
to truly be a teacher, it has to be a calling and a passion.
My expectations were quite different. I anticipated that I will be embarrassed while
teaching college students within of IIT. Well, the experience was the opposite. Teaching
and interacting with these students not only boosted my confidence but also deepened
my sense of respect. I was well guided and gave my best effort, a lesson that I can carry
through my life.

Future Plans
 Pursue my dream
Conclusion
My internship experiences have been life-changing, involving duties such as
supervising tests and leading activities. The entire weeks were filled with excitement while
interacting with other students and gaining knowledge from their unique insights. It's
become clear to me that teaching isn't just a job; it's a vocation. What surprised me the
most was how my expectations were completely turned upside down. I expected that I
will be embarrassed or get questions about my capabilities from the students, but instead,
they boosted my self-esteem.
Ma'am Celyn has enabled me to become not only a better student but also a
prospect for a career in education. I've learned not only how to become a good teacher
but also life principles.
My dream of becoming a teacher encountered some challenges but this internship
is reason enough to go on in pursuing my dream. This internship has provided not just
academic knowledge but also passion and commitment that will guide me beyond the
classroom. I leave this internship grateful, with these experiences and lessons written in
my mind forever.
