Final Exam Practice STAT245

1. Which result is better: a score of 215 with a mean of 230 and standard deviation of 20
or a score of 1920 with a mean of 2010 and a standard deviation of 108?

2. For the following frequency table

Score Range 10-18 19-27 28-36 37-45 46-54 55-63

for x
Frequency f 2 4 6 5 4 1
a. Calculate the Standard Deviation
b. Represent this data using an Ogive (cumulative frequency graph).

3. The following table that gives data about having glasses in a certain class:
Glasses yes no total
Gender
boys 15
girls 14
total 32 70
a. What is the probability of having glasses given that it is a boy?
b. Calculate the probability to be a boy OR having glasses

4. From past experience, it is known that if a high-school graduate applies for a Football
Scholarship in Brice College and gets to the final selection stage, the probability to get
the scholarship is 30%.
This year, 9 applicants got to the final selection stage.
a. What is the probability that EXACTLY 5 students will get the scholarship?
b. What is the probability that at least one student will get the scholarship?

5. A machine that produces weights for forklifts is able to produce 750 of them in a day
with a standard deviation of 60 products. Assume a Normal Distribution in this question.
If a sample of 36 products is taken, what is the probability that the MEAN of that sample
is between 755 and 770?

6. A sample of 250 randomly selected U.S. citizens was asked if they know what is the “Bill-
of-Rights”. The answer to this question can be only “yes” or “no”.
72 citizens answered “yes” to this question.
Using 90% confidence level, estimate what percent of all U.S. citizens will answer “yes”
to this question. (give upper and lower limits using a Margin-of-Error).
7. The Head-Engineer of a Bridge-designer-and-producer company claims that a small
bridge (a bridge that can let people pass over a small creek) can be built in 10 days,
according to past experience.
A member in his team challenges this estimation, he thinks that it takes more than 10
days to build such a bridge, and since the standard deviation of past experience data is
not known, the estimation of a 10- day build time is not reliable.
To test his claim, the team member checks a sample of 15 bridges and finds that they
were built in 11.6 days in average, and the Standard deviation of his sample was 2.1
days.
USING 99% CONFIDENCE LEVEL, determine if there is sufficient evidence to conclude
that it takes more than 10 days to build a bridge.

8. For the following set of X and Y data, determine if there is a significant linear
correlation by calculating the correlation coefficient and using 0.05 significance level.
X 2.7 3.5 5.8 6.4 7.3
Y 15.6 12.4 13.1 8.2 3.6

9. A fashion designer assumes that if he gives his clients the colors red, black, blue, and
white, these colors will be chosen equally (i.e. the same percent of population will
choose each of these 4 colors). To test that, the designer asks 40 of his clients about
their preferable choice of color. The answer of his customers:
color red black blue white
No. of people that 13 6 16 5
chose the color

Perform a χ2 test by creating an appropriate table of observed-vs-expected (E=n∙p, O

is the actual data from the table), calculating χ2 and using 0.025 significance level.

10. Assume Poisson Distribution in this question.

For a recent period of 100 years, 530 Atlantic hurricanes were detected.
a. Find µ, the mean number of hurricanes per year.
b. If P(x)is the probability of x Atlantic hurricanes in a randomly selected year, find P(0),
P(2) and P(9).
c. Actually, there were (during these 100 years period) 2 years with no Atlantic
hurricanes, 5 years with two Atlantic hurricanes and 4 years with nine Atlantic
hurricanes.
Does the Poisson distribution appear to be a good model in this case?
Use a “goodness-of-fit” χ2 test with 90% confidence level to determine it.
