Introduction:
Epilepsy is a prevalent neurological disorder characterized by recurrent seizures, which result from abnormal, synchronous
neuronal activity in the brain. Understanding the complex dynamics underlying these seizures is essential for the development
of effective treatment strategies and improving the quality of life for individuals affected by epilepsy. While experimental
approaches provide valuable insights, mathematical models offer a complementary perspective by elucidating the intricate
processes involved in neuronal activity. One such mathematical model is the Wendling model, which explicitly represents the
behavior of a cortical column, a fundamental functional unit of the cerebral cortex. This model captures the interactions
between excitatory and inhibitory neurons, providing a valuable framework for investigating the behavior of the human brain
under various conditions, particularly during epileptic seizures. In this study, we aim to examine the dynamic activities
occurring during epileptic seizures and the influence of governing parameters on these activities using the Wendling model.
By focusing on this model, we seek to gain a deeper understanding of the complex neuronal processes that drive seizure-
related activities and explore the impact of distinct biological parameters on the emergence of epileptiform oscillatory activity
observed in recorded electroencephalograms (EEGs).

Materials and Methods:

To investigate the neuronal dynamics during epileptic seizures, the study implemented the Wendling model, a mathematical
representation of a cortical column capturing the interactions between excitatory and inhibitory neurons. A Simulink model of
Wendling's structure of a cortical column was designed to facilitate our simulation and analysis. In this model, Gaussian white
noise block with a mean of 90Hz and a standard deviation of 2 was incorporated to simulate the input fed into the pyramidal
cells. We represented the post-synaptic transformation (PSP) by a linear transfer function, which allowed us to analyze the
dynamic behavior of the system under various conditions. The model consists of a system of differential equations that
describe the dynamics of neuronal populations and their interactions, providing an appropriate framework for investigating the
behavior of the human brain during epileptic seizures. After implementing the Wendling model, a detailed bifurcation analysis
in the parameter space was implemented to determine the boundaries between different seizure-related activities. Bifurcation
analysis is a powerful tool for exploring the changes in the dynamic behavior of a system as its parameters are varied.
Through this analysis, we aimed to identify and understand the different types of activities that occur during epileptic seizures
and the influence of governing parameters on these activities. The subsequent bifurcation analysis provided valuable insights
into the relationships between different seizure-related activities and the parameters governing the behavior of the Wendling
model.

Results, Conclusions, and Discussions:

By simulating the cortical column's behavior under various conditions, we identified diverse activity types that occur during
epileptic seizures. These activity types included normal activity, interictal activity (between seizures), and ictal activity
(during seizures). The activity types were characterized by their power spectra, representing the distribution of power across
different frequency bands in the EEG signals. An activity color map was created, which visually represented the transitions
between these activities as the governing parameters changed, providing a clear overview of the relationships between the
different activities and the parameters that influenced them which allow for a deeper understanding of the complex dynamics
involved in seizure-related activities. In addition to the activity color map, we generated a bifurcation diagram illustrating the

regions in the parameter space where different seizure-related activities occurred enabling researchers to visualize the
boundaries between activities and understand the effects of changing parameters on the system's behavior. This visualization
further highlighted the relationships between the biological parameters of the cortical column and the emergence of
epileptiform oscillatory activity observed in recorded EEGs. Our study using the Wendling model and bifurcation analysis has
provided valuable insights into the complex neuronal processes involved in epilepsy. By identifying diverse activity types and
their relationships with governing parameters, we have deepened our understanding of the factors influencing seizure-related
activities. The activity color map and bifurcation diagram generated in our study serve as useful visual aids in examining the
transitions between various activities and the impact of changing parameters on the system's behavior. Furthermore, our
findings have important implications for the development of targeted therapies and interventions for epilepsy. By better
understanding the neuronal processes that drive seizure-related activities and the influence of governing parameters on these
activities, researchers and clinicians can work towards more effective treatments tailored to the specific needs of individuals
with epilepsy. The Wendling model and the methodology employed in this study can be extended to investigate other
neurological disorders involving abnormal neuronal activity, such as Alzheimer's disease or Parkinson's disease.
