1. What is the main premise of “The Great Hack”? Can you summarize it in your own words?

 The Great Hack goes into great depth about how, in the wake of the 2016 U.S. presidential
election, the data company Cambridge Analytica came to represent the dark sides of social media
platforms like Facebook and collected and used people's data to sell users stuff, including
political candidates and agendas.

2. Who are the main characters in the documentary and what roles do they play?
 DAVID CARROLL- associate professor of media design at the Parsons School of Design at The
New School who filed a formal complaint against Cambridge Analytica under the UK Data Protection
Act 1998 to obtain his data, profile and score.
 CAROLE CADWALLADR- British investigative journalist and feature writer for The Observer.
 BRITTANY KAISER- former business development director of SCL Group, the parent company of
Cambridge Analytica.
 JULIAN WHEATLAND- last CEO and former COO and CFO of Cambridge Analytica, chairman of
SCL.
 ROGER MCNAMEE- fund manager and venture capitalist, an early investor in Facebook.
 CHRISTOPHER WYLIE- former director of research at Cambridge Analytica, and whistle-blower.

3. What is Cambridge Analytica? What role does it play in the documentary?

 Cambridge Analytica is a political consulting firm located in the United Kingdom. It was founded
as a division of SCL Group, a private intelligence organization involved in both political and
military sectors. It started off helping Ted Cruz's campaign, which was trying to secure the US
Republican nominee for 2016. Through the gathering of user data, it exploited Facebook as a tool
for "political-voter surveillance".

4. How does the documentary portray the impact of data privacy and social media on
democracy?
 Social media platforms like Twitter, Facebook, and Google have the power to sway people's
opinions and change civic engagement, which would be similar to "hijacking" democracy. Since
it makes it easier to exercise other human rights including the freedom of expression, of thought,
conscience, and religion, of assembly and association, and of not being subjected to
discrimination, the right to privacy is also acknowledged as an enabling right.

5. What were some of the techniques used by Cambridge Analytica to influence public
opinion?
 Cambridge Analytica claimed to own up to 5000 data points about each and every voter in the
United States. It claimed to be able to identify people based on their personality type and then
individually microtarget messages to change their behavior by using "psychographic" analytics to
its dataset.

6. How does the documentary explore the concept of “data rights”?

 The British consulting firm Cambridge Analytica collected millions of Facebook users' personal
data without their consent, primarily for use in political advertising. This breached each
individual's data privacy, which gives rise to data rights.
7. What were your thoughts on the ethical issues raised in the documentary?
 The movie brought up moral questions about how digital companies like Google and Facebook
can collect personal information about users so finely and frequently without their knowledge,
and then use that data to sway users' decisions. Violating our right to privacy is an unethical act of
accessing someone else's personal information.

8. How has watching “The Great Hack” influenced your view on data privacy?
 The movie had a big impact on how I felt about data privacy. The matter that surfaced from it
worries me about my personal privacy as a person who mostly utilizes social networking sites
like Facebook, Instagram, and others.

9. What measures do you think should be taken to prevent the misuse of data in the future?
 Some ways to prevent the misuse of data in the future especially your data online are encryption
of sensitive files, using strong passwords to your accounts, securely dispose your data, and
manage devices such as using anti-virus software,
routinely patching software, whitelisting applications, using device passcodes, suspending inactive
sessions.

10. Would you recommend “The Great Hack” to others? Why or why not?
 The narrative intertwines to reveal Cambridge Analytica's involvement in the politics of other
nations, such as the Brexit campaign in the United Kingdom and the 2016 US elections. Since the
documentary's primary goal is to enlighten and educate, I would want to suggest it to others.
