Assessment
This is an underpinning knowledge and practical module. Learning Outcomes should be
assessed using formative and summative assessments. Evidence of achieving this modules
learning outcomes, at a knowledge level, is attained by oral and written assessment. The written
assessment is closed book and a minimum standard of 80% is required. Attainment of the
student performance at a hands-on level is achieved by the use of practical activities aligned with
marking guides. The practical activities may be used as a learning activity or as a practical
assessment. If the practical activity is used as a practical assessment, the student must work
alone and be deemed competent in all aspects.

NOTE TO FACILITATORS - CULTURAL DIVERSITY:

This module has been written to represent the general principles of business operations. In some
cases, the information or examples used may not accurately represent the business environment of a
specific culture or location.

Facilitators should review the content and make deletions or adjustments to suit the specific needs
imposed by their students' culture or business environment.

NOTE TO FACILITATORS - RECOGNITION OF PRIOR LEARNING:

This module covers skills and knowledge that is common delivered in secondary schools or learned by
individuals using computers at home. There is a high likelihood that some students will be able to
complete the assessment without attending the training.

Arrangements to allow students to submit for assessment prior to delivering the training should be
arranged by the facilitator or course co-ordinator.

ASSESSMENT STRATEGY

Assessment events should adopt an holistic approach. Assessment activities should focus on collecting
evidence with regard to learner achievement of the module purpose and course outcomes.

Validity
Assessment validity is improved where only the module purpose is assessed, and where elements
of literacy and numeracy are controlled to ensure that no learner is disadvantaged. Ensuring that
assessment methods are appropriate for the module purpose/learning outcomes being assessed
will enhance the validity of assessment. In addition, assessment instructions are to be written at a
level of literacy appropriate to a trade level.

Reliability
Ensuring that course and module documents are understood and used by providers of assessment
can improve reliability. Adherence to the specified qualifications listed in the course and module
documents is critical.

Fairness
Providing the learner with a choice in the method of assessment and with the learner knowing
when, where, what and how they will be assessed, may facilitate fairness of assessment, not having
event failures within the module assessment.

Flexibility
An assessment is flexible when the methods of assessment used can be changed to suit the needs
of the candidate and the workplace.
Assessment events should be designed to collect a variety of evidence with regard to both the
acquisition of skills and knowledge and the application of skills and knowledge. Although the
emphasis of assessment for many modules will be on practical activities, it is important that the
knowledge underpinning practical performance is also adequately assessed.
Assessment events should assess task management, contingency management and job-role
environment skills in addition to the more obvious task skills. As the automotive earthmoving &
industrial trade places an ever-increasing emphasis on diagnosis and problem solving, assessment
should be designed with a similar focus, particularly in the later course modules.
Where appropriate, workplace assessment events should simulate the activities of the workplace.
In addition, workplace assessments should be conducted in the workplace, however, where this is
not possible, the assessment may be conducted in a simulated workplace environment (for
example a training workshop).

ACTIVITIES AND ASSESSMENT OVERVIEW

OVERVIEW
The Activity Workbook contains activities relating to this module. Classroom activities are
conducted at the end of each learning outcome to confirm learning. The knowledge assessment
component is designed to assess the student’s underpinning knowledge prior to performing the
practical activities.

ACTIVITY WORKBOOK STRUCTURE

Classroom Activities
The classroom activities are designed to reinforce students knowledge of topics, while providing a
link from learning to practical (work related) tasks. Each activity is aligned to specific learning
outcome presentations.

The Learning Facilitator will determine when the activities are conducted (after sessions, topics,
end of day etc.).

All relevant classroom activities must be completed prior to commencing the knowledge assessments.

Knowledge Assessments
The Learning Facilitator will administer a knowledge assessment for this program. This
assessment will consist of a selection of short answer, multiple choice or true/false questions
relating to this training module.

Students will need to achieve a competent result in the knowledge assessments. The written
assessment is closed book and a minimum standard of 80% is required.

Practical Activities
Practical activities may be conducted in a training workshop environment or in the workplace.
These activities are designed to assess students practical skills once the knowledge assessments
has been completed. The Practical Activities - Student Performance Guide is located in the
Activity Workbook.

The Learning Facilitator will determine when the practical activities are conducted.

Workplace Assessment(s)
The facilitator’s Practical Activities - Marking Guide, located later in this guide, provides a detailed
checklist of students assessment tasks and performance criteria and general knowledge
questions related to the assessment.

The Workplace Assessment(s) should be conducted in the workplace, but may also be conducted
in a simulated workplace environment (for example in a purpose built training workshop). The
same Practical Activities - Marking Guide may be used for workplace assessments

When students are confident that they can meet all requirements of the Workplace
Assessment(s), they will be expected to perform it under the supervision of an approved assessor.

If they meet all requirements in the assessment (as detailed in the marking guide), the assessor
will sign the checklist and submit the result to the relevant accrediting authority. The submitted
result will become part of students portfolio of evidence.
