In this incident, “sex trafficking,” refers to the exploitation of children involving
any form of sexual abuse for the purposes of economic gain. International organizations
report that the Philippines has one of the highest rates of child exploitation for sex
tourism worldwide. Almost two million children are victims of sex trafficking
worldwide. The Philippine province of Cebu is a popular tourist destination, and
reportedly experiences a higher prevalence of sex trafficking cases.
The summary of an incident that a girl who was allegedly victims four months of
online sexual exploitation and abuse by her own mother was rescued in Barangay Pasil,
Cebu City, on November 30. The information came from the report that a Norwegian
citizen Raymond Harper was arrested by the Norwegian Police, for having Child Sexual
Abuse Material (CSAM). Authorities discovered the mother and Harper exchanging
indecent and sexualized image of the child through chat messages from the WhatsApp
program on Harper's gadget. The mother was not directly in detained because she was
not caught in doing illegal online show.
One of the key factors contributing to the risk of child trafficking in the
Philippines is poverty. Children are also more at risk of exploitation due to a lack of
educational and job opportunities, which promotes the cycle of trafficking. There are
many possible negative effects of this incident such as distress and separation anxiety,
Confusion, Low self-esteem. Poor education level due to lack of schooling and more
that Exploited children are at increased risk of experiencing depression that lead
suicide.
