Test procedure control

Traditional hardness testing systems use a “dead weight” mechanical design or inaccurate spring force mechanism to apply
the test force. Such systems are lacking test control, as there is no feed-back on the actual applied force.

The Closed Loop technology with a force feedback system, as applied in the NEXUS 605RS/RSB , constantly measures and
controls the applied force on the tester’s indentor and tested surface. Consequently, this superior control system offers an almost
unlimited selection of test loads and test rates for virtually any test condition imaginable.

that case, the time and date will not be reliable.

5.2 Splash screen

After switching on the power of the tester, a splash screen will appear as long as the machine is homing. During homing,
the load motor will move the indenter upward to the home position. The splash screen shows the INNOVATEST logo, the
name of the tester type and the firmware version number.

A progress bar indicates the time that is left before the splash
screen is removed, meaning that the homing sequence is
completed. Wait until the splash screen disappears. To prepare
the machine for use, a popup tells you to turn down the elevator
spindle until the indenter is not touching the surface and to press
OK to zero the depth sensor. To turn the elevator spindle down,
move the spindle wheel counter clockwise.

www.innovatest-europe.com 15
After pressing OK on this popup, the machine is ready
to use.

NOTE:
You can zero the depth sensor at any time by touching the screen area that is showing the depth sensor bar graph under the text “READY”
and keeping this area pressed for more than 2 seconds. The same popup appears telling you to turn the elevator spindle down and to press
OK to zero the depth sensor.

5.3 Main screen

When the main screen is displayed, the tester is ready to use. The concept behind the screen layout is to give direct access
to functions from within the user interface, without having to browse menus to find the desired feature. Therefore, the
screen is divided into area’s that function as touch-sensitive buttons. Some of these screen areas have a double function:
When pressing a button briefly, the “normal” function is executed. When pressing a button for more than 2 seconds, the
“alternative” function is executed. When pressing a screen area that has a touch sensitive button function, the background
colour of this button changes.

5.3.1 Rockwell depth sensor information/ Brinell diameter entry

The Rockwell depth sensor information/Brinell diameter entry fields are shown below:

When the tester supports non-Rockwell scales, the diameters D1 and D2 have to be entered in the diameter entry field.
The hardness is calculated using the entered diameters. When a Rockwell scale is selected, the indenter displacement (Ind.
displ.) and the depth are shown. The “indenter displacement” value is the distance the indenter moved relative to the zero
position of the depth sensor. The zero position is when the indenter is not touching anything. The indenter displacement
value is shown when a new indentation is started and not when a measurement from the measurement list is selected. The
indenter displacement shows the distance that the indenter has moved relative to the zero position of the depth sensor.
The ”depth” value is the difference between the indenter displacement value during preload dwelling and the indenter
displacement value during recovery dwelling. This is the actual Rockwell depth used to calculate the Rockwell hardness value.

www.innovatest-europe.com 19
5.3.2. Limit entry & limit setup

When a hardness value has been calculated or a measurement is selected in the measurement list, the background colour
of the measurement data & statistics field is either blue, red or green. When the background colour is blue, this means that
both the upper and lower limit field is set to inactive and showing “---“. When the background colour is green, this means that
the hardness value is within the limits. When the colour is red, this means that the hardness value is outside of the limits. The
hardness values in the measurement list will also be coloured depending on whether the value is within or outside the limits.
The limit entry fields are used to enter the upper and lower limit individually:

The alternative function of the limit entry fields allows setting the corresponding limit active or inactive by pressing either the upper
limit or lower limit entry field for more than 2 seconds. The following screen will appear when setting the upper limit entry field:

In this screen, the chosen limit can be set active or

inactive. Then press OK to save your choice. The device
will remember your choice, even after power off. Press
CANCEL if you want to leave the limit setup screen
without saving any change.

NOTE:
To be able to enter a limit value, first set this limit active.
When a limit is set to inactive, the text “---“ is shown in
the corresponding limit field.

20 www.innovatest-europe.com
When the upper limit is set active and the upper limit entry field is pressed briefly, a keypad appears, allowing entering the
desired limit value:

When the lower limit is set active, press the lower limit
entry field briefly to enter a new lower limit value.

NOTE:
When entering the limits, the device will not allow
entering f.e. a lower limit value that is higher than the
upper limit value or vice versa.

Here are some examples of limit settings and how they affect the way that the hardness value and measurements are displayed:

Example 1: Both limits are inactive.

www.innovatest-europe.com 23
The measurement list can be browsed by pressing the
up or down button. You can also select a measurement
from the list simply by pressing the desired list item.
When selecting a measurement, the hardness value and
Rockwell depth/Brinell diameters of the corresponding
measurement will be shown. At the same time, the
background colour of the measurement data & statistics
field is updated to indicate if the hardness of the
selected measurement is within or outside the limits.

See picture on the left.

5.3.4. Load a program

The device is able to take a snapshot of all the relevant settings at that moment and store these settings as a program with a
user-definable name. This way you can define your own predefined sets of settings and easily switch between them. The load
program button (see picture below) is used to recall a stored program. The “---“ below the load button icon is an indication that
currently no program is loaded, or that a loaded program has been overruled by changing one of the settings.

When the load button is pressed, the following screen appears:

The window shows all the stored programs. You can

browse through the list of programs by pressing the up
or down button. You can also select a program from the
list simply by pressing the desired list item. The detailed
information about the selected program is shown in the

An alphanumeric keypad appears, allowing entering a

new program name.

26 www.innovatest-europe.com
After entering a new program name and pressing the
OK button to accept the changed name and pressing
OK to save the program, the current settings are saved
using the entered name. In the save program button, the
number of saved programs is shown.

5.3.6. Manual start/stop indentation

Before starting an indentation, check that the tester is

ready for testing, meaning that the elevator spindle is
moved downward so the indenter is not pressing
anything. The bar graph showing the indenter
displacement is empty and the text “READY” is
displayed above the bar graph.

To start an indentation, move the elevator spindle

upward by moving the spindle wheel clockwise. While
moving the spindle upward, the indenter will touch the
sample under test. From that moment on, when continue
to move the elevator spindle upward, the indenter is
pushed upward and the bar graph shows the indenter
displacement measured by the depth sensor. The text
“UP” is shown, indicating that you need to keep moving
the elevator spindle upward.

When suddenly reversing the elevator spindle movement before the OK range is reached, the text “UP” will change to
“DOWN”, indicating that you need to move the elevator spindle down until the text “READY” appears, before you can start
over again to start a new indentation cycle.

www.innovatest-europe.com 27
To start an indentation, make sure that you keep
moving the elevator spindle upward, preferably without
any interruption and at a constant speed, until the bar
graph reaches the OK range. Stop moving the elevator
spindle upward when the bar graph is somewhere in
the middle of the OK range.
The text “STOP” appears and the background colour of
the bar graph changes to red. At the same moment the
indentation cycle starts.

During the indentation cycle, the status bar shows the different phases of the indentation process. When pressing the bar graph
while the text “STOP” is shown, the indentation cycle is stopped immediately, the load motor is retracted and the text “DOWN”
appears. The elevator spindle needs to be moved down until the indenter is not touching the sample under test anymore. At
that moment the tester will be ready for a new indentation and shows the text “READY”.

5.3.7. Measurement data/statistics & hardness scale and force selection

The measurement and statistics field shows either the current measured hardness value or the hardness of a stored
measurement after it is selected in the measurement list. When the limits are active, the colour of the measurement and statistics
field indicates whether the hardness value is within the limits or not.
Additionally the statistics data, which is calculated over all saved measurements, is shown.

1. Hardness value (calculated after an indentation was completed, or belonging to a stored measurement selected in
the measurement list). When the hardness value shows “---“, this means that a new measurement is initiated, but no
hardness is calculated yet.

2. The current selected hardness scale.

3. Statistics data over all saved measurements in the measurement list.

Num = number of saved measurements.
Min = minimum value of the saved measurements.
Max = maximum value of the saved measurements.
Range = difference between the minimum and maximum value.
Mean = mean value calculated over the saved measurements.
Sdev = standard deviation calculated over the saved measurements.

Press the measurement and statistics field briefly to select the desired hardness scale and force. The following screen will appear:

For Rockwell scales, three dwell times are shown: the preload dwell time, the main load dwell time and the recovery load
dwell time.

For non-Rockwell scales, one dwell time is shown: the main load dwell time.
When an indentation cycle starts and the desired force for the particular indentation phase is reached, the corresponding
dwell time value will start counting down to zero. When the value reaches zero, the next phase of the indentation cycle starts.

When the indentation cycle is completed, the dwell time values reset back to their start values. The lower part of the field shows
a triangular shape representing the indenter and a rectangular shape representing the specimen surface. When an indentation
is started, the progress indication will show the position of the indenter while moving towards the specimen surface. When
the specimen surface is reached, the progress indication changes to a bar graph that represents the measured force until the
selected force is reached :

48 www.innovatest-europe.com
6. Performing a hardness test

1. Power on the tester.

Make sure the emergency switch is unlocked. Gently rotate the emergency switch button clockwise to unlock the switch.

2. Check that the correct indenter type (ball or diamond cone) is installed for the desired scale.

3. The adjustable clamping attachment is used to eliminate the play in the elevator spindle. When the elevator spindle
is adjusted so that the manual start bar graph indicates that the depth sensor is in the OK range, the clamping
attachment is clamped against the test table with a certain force. The clamping attachment should be adjusted so
that the clamping force is high enough to eliminate the play in the elevator spindle at the moment that the depth
sensor is in the OK range. When clamping, you feel an increasing resistance of the spindle wheel. This resistance
increases up to a maximum when the depth sensor moves into the OK range. When feeling no resistance while
the depth sensor moves into the OK range or when the resistance makes it impossible to reach the OK range, the
clamping attachment needs to be adjusted accordingly.

4. Select a hardness scale (and the desired force for non-Rockwell scales).

5. Set the dwell times to the desired values.

6. When relevant for the selected hardness scale, set the shape correction to the correct shape and shape
diameter.

7. Position the specimen

Use a proper specimen fixture when the specimen is not flat. Ensure that the specimen surface condition complies
with the required standards. Put the specimen in the centre of the test table, flat anvil or X-Y stage. The specimen
surface must be in parallel with the test table/flat anvil. Use a proper clamp or fixture when using a specimen with
complicated geometric shapes.

8. Start the indentation

Check that the tester is ready for testing. The status bar at the bottom of the screen should show: “Ready for testing”.
When the status bar shows: “Turn spindle down”, then first turn the spindle down so the indenter is not touching
anything and the status bar shows: “Ready for testing” and the text “READY” is shown in the manual start.
When the tester is ready, turn the spindle wheel clockwise to move the elevator spindle upward, preferable without
interruption and at a constant speed. Keep turning the spindle upward while the indenter touches the sample
under test. The text “UP” is shown above the bar graph. At the moment that the indenter touches the sample under
test and is pushed upward, the bar graph on the screen will slowly rise. Stop turning the spindle upward when the
bar graph has reached the OK range. Now the text “UP” will change to “STOP” and the bar graph background
colour changes to red. The indentation cycle starts.
The indentation cycle can be stopped at any moment by touching the area in which the bar graph is displayed.

In case a Rockwell scale is selected, the tester applies the preload force, then the main load force and finally the
recovery load. Each force application is followed by a corresponding dwell time during which the force is maintained.
When the indentation cycle is completed, the Rockwell depth and the calculated hardness are displayed, while the
text “DOWN” is displayed and the status bar shows: “Turn the spindle down”. Before starting a new indentation
cycle, move the elevator spindle downward.

In case a non-Rockwell scale is selected, the tester applies the main load, followed by the main load dwell time.
When the indentation cycle is completed, the text “DOWN” is displayed and the status bar shows: “Turn the
spindle down”. Before starting a new indentation cycle, move the elevator spindle downward.
Use the appropriate tool (Brinell microscope) to measure the horizontal and vertical diameter of the indentation and
enter the diameters in the diameter entry fields. The tester will calculate and show the hardness using the entered
diameters.

49 www.innovatest-europe.com
If you want the hardness measurements to be saved to the measurement list automatically, check the
“Automatic save measurement” option in the settings screen. Any new measurement will then be saved to the
list automatically up to a maximum of 50 measurements.
If you want to save the measurement manually, uncheck the “Automatic save measurement” option in the
settings screen. The measurement is saved when touching the measurement and statistics field and keeping
this field touched for more than 2 seconds. Saving is only possible when the hardness value is valid, thus not
showing “---“.

7. Calibration procedures

The NEXUS 605RS/RSB series is equipped with a highly sensitive and accurate load cell that gives feedback on the applied
force.

It is unlikely that you to need to adjust any settings of your NEXUS 605RS/RSB in the normal product live.
If your tester requires calibration please contact your supplier or the INNOVATEST service center directly.
Calibration of the NEXUS 605RS/RSB testers should be done by an experienced person only.

7.1 Force calibration

In the event that the force application of your tester needs to be recalibrated, please seek advice from your supplier or contact
the service department of INNOVATEST directly.

To calibrate the applicable force of your NEXUS 605RS/RSB series hardness tester, specific equipment is required (range of
calibrated precision load cells).

7.3 Maintenance advice

Do not clean your tester with chemical solutions such as “thinner” or white spirit as this can cause permanent damage to the
painting, metallic surfaces or plastics.

Do not use aggressive or abrasive materials

Keep the elevator spindle clean and do NOT lubricate the spindle with normal oil. Use sewing machine oil and CLEAN THE
SPINDLE THOROUGHLY after lubrication and make sure as little as possible oil is left on the spindle. Repeat the cleaning
procedure after a few days to ensure no oil will dry up on the spindle surface.

In case any part needs replacement, use genuine INNOVATEST parts to avoid disturbing of the performance of your tester.
