1. Who is George Orwell? Why is he famous?
George Orwell was an English novelist, essayist and critic most famous for his
novels Animal Farm and Nineteen Eighty-Four, but many of his essays and
other books have also remained popular. His work provides one of the twentieth
century's most trenchant and widely recognized critiques of totalitarism.

2. Where was Orwell from? In which way is he related to Catalonia?


He was from the city of Motihari which is located near Gopal Sah High School.
Orwell published in 1938 an autobiographical account of his experience as a
volunteer for the Republicans in the Spanish Civil War, the book is called
“Homage to Catalonia".

3. When did he wrote 1948? Explain what are the main historical and
political events of the decade in which Orwell wrote 1948.
Orwell wrote the story over the course of a decade, although much of it he
wrote between 1946 to 1948, the novel was published in 1949.
When 1984 was written, World War II had ended only a few years prior, and
many people believed World War III was inevitable, making the wars of the
novel feel realistic. The novel was written in the middle of the second World
War, about three years after the U.S. dropped atomic bombs on Hiroshima and
Nagasaki. Orwell references nuclear-powered wars happening in different parta
of the world. Orwell also included everyday life experiences from World War II
London. The unappetizing food, inconsistent electricity, and scarcity of basic
household goods in 1984 come from Orwell’s experiences with wartime
rationing.
