Book Written by George Orwell

This report is based upon the book 1984, written by George Orwell. This book was published

as a print (hardback and paperback) by Secker & Warburg on 8 June 1949.

Introduction of the Author

The book 1984 was written by Eric Arthur Blair famously known by his pen name George

Orwell. George Orwell was an English novelist, journalist, critic, and essayist. He was born

in 25 June 1903 and died in 21 January 1950 aged 46. The book was Orwell’s final book

completed and published in his lifetime. In the year 1980, George Orwell was honored by the

English Heritage with a blue plaque at 50 Lawford Road, Kentish Town, London where he

resided from August 1935 to January 1936.

Summary

I found this particular book to be well thought out and creatively written. The author has a

really good understanding of the impact of totalitarianism on the general citizenry.

Specifically, the book speaks on the dangers of totalitarianism. The setting of the story is in a

dystopian imaginary future of Great Britain, that is, 1984. This is when the world is plagued

by propaganda, government surveillance, perpetual war, and historical injustice. Moreover,

the book portrays that in this dystopian imaginary future, there will be a crackdown on

independent thinking and/or individuality.

The main characters in the book are Winston Smith (protagonist), Julia (Winston’s lover and

covert rebel), and O’Brien (member of the Inner Party hypocritically posing as a member of

The Brotherhood). Other notable characters in the book include, Charrington (officer of the

Thought Police), Tom Parsons (Winston’s naïve neighbor and a member of the Outer Party),

Syme (Winston’s colleague at the Ministry of Truth), Ampleforth (Winston’s one-time

colleague at the Records Department), and Katharine Smith (Winston’s wife).

Recommendation

I find this book to be perfect for individuals who are interested in politics. This is because the

book entails the impact of totalitarian governments and the particular consequences that

totalitarianism can bring to a country, for instance, mass surveillance, revolution, and

perpetual war.
