Before upgrade you must always backup your configuration file, your system disk and all your
data (if possible). At minimum backup your configuration and system, this is easy and generally
quick to do.
If you have installed ports, packages or extensions outside of a jail they may not all work after
an upgrade. It depends on what you installed, how and whether or not the underlying FreeBSD
software versions your add-ons rely on have changed.
Upgrading is not a magic bullet to solve a problem you are having with your server. Fix your
current problem first, then upgrade later. Do not make matters worse by adding more
complications on top of an existing problem.
Only use Embedded firmware upgrade if your old system is equal or higher or as indicated in
the latest release notes.
Procedures:
Backup your current configuration. See! I knew you didn't do it the first time!
