Heat Treatment 4.1 Austenitic Grades: 4.1.1 Except for the strain-hardened grade (see 4.1.3), and the hot-rolled grade (see 4.1.4), all austenitic grades of stain tess steel shall be furnished in the solution annealed condition, with subsequent light cold drawing and straightening permitted (see Supplementary Requirement $5 i annealing must be the final operation). Solution annealing for all grades, except the H grades (see 4.1.2), NOS367 (see 4.1.8), $31254 (see 4.1.5), '§32050 (sce 4.1.5), $3328 (see 4.1.7), $34565 (see 4.1.6), and 535315 (see 4.1.9), shall consist of (7) heating the material to a temperaiure of 1900°F [1040°C} minimam so that grain boundary carbides enter into solution, and cooling rapidly to prevent grain boundary carbide previpitation; or alternatively” (2) (except for the columbium and titanium stabilized grades 309Cb, 310Cb, 316Cb, 3161, 321. 347, and 348) immediately following hot working while the temperature is above 1750°F {955°C} so that grain boundary carbides are in solution, cooling rapidly to prevent grain boundary carbide precipita tion, When Supplementary Reguisement 82 is invoked, all ‘austenitic grades except $30815 shall pass the intergranular ‘corrosion fest requirements described in S2 4.12 For H gfades, the minimum solution annealing tem- peratures shall be as follows: 4.1.2.1 When hot finished, 1900°F [1040°C] for Types 304H, 309H, 310H, and 316K; 1925°F [1050°C] for Types 31H, 347H, and 348H, 4.1.2.2 When cold worked prior to solution annealing, 1900°F [1040°C] for Types 304H, 309H, 3108, and 3161: 2000°F [1095°C | for ‘Types 321H, 3471, and 348H. Nove 3—Sotution annealing temperatures above [950°F [1065°C] may impair the resistance to intergrnlarcomvsion aftr subsequent exposure tw sensitizing conditions in the sabilized grades, Types 321, 321 H, 347 S47 1h MB and 34% H, When intergranular eotosion fs of concer, the purchaser should specify the corasion test oF S2 (to be eoaducted on ensiized specimens). The manufacturer may, if oecesary, use a Tower Temperature reyolotion anneal or a slablzation anneal after a high temperature solution anneal inorder to meet corrosion test requirement, CConsiderstion should be given to the corrosive media before using a stabilization anneal at es than T800°F [980°C as such a treatment may not be flly effective forall mel ‘Nove 4—Grain size requirements for the HC grades are desrie in Section 3. 4.13 Strain Hardened Austenitic Type 316—When Type 316 is desired with increased mechanical propesties, the strain hardened condition may be specified and is produced by solution annealing, as described in 4.1.1, followed by strain hardening sufficient to meet the required mechanical proper- ties. Solution annealed and strain hardened material shall be capable of mecting the intergranular corrosion test of Supple: mentary Requirement S2. 4.1.3.1 Two strain hardened conditions have been estab- lished for different applications: Level 1 and Level 2 (see the ‘Mechanical Property Requirements table). Fer caplcation se Appendix XI 4.14 High tensile Type XM-19 shall be in the hot-rolled or strain-bardened condition and shall be capable of meeting the mechanical property requirements of the Mechanical Property Requirements table and passing the intergranular corrosion test prescribed in S2. The strain hardened concition is achieved by solution annealing followed by cold working sufficient to evelop the required mechanical properties. 4,1.5 Solution annealing of $31254 and $32050 shall con sist_ of heating the material to a temperature of 2100°R [1150°C) minimum, for an appropriate time followed by water {quenching or rapidly cooling by other means. 4.1.6 Solution annealing of $34565 shall consist of heating. the material in the range of temperature from 2050°F [1120°C] fo 2140°F [1170°C] for an appropriate time, followed by water quenching or rapidly cooling by other means. 4.1.7 Solution annealing of $33228 shall consist of heating the material in the temperature range 2050 to 21600°F {1120 (0 1180°C] for an appropriate time followed by water quenching ‘or rapid cooling by other means. 4.1.8 Solution annealing of NO8367 shall consist of heating the material to 2 temperature of 2025°F (1105°C) minimum for fan appropriate time followed by water quenching or rapidly ‘cooling by other means. 4.1.9 Solution annealing of $35315 shall consist of heating the material to a temperature of 2100°F [1150°C] minimum, {or an appropriate time followed by water quenching or rapidly cooling by other means. 4.2 Austenitie-Ferritic Grades: 42.1 S31803, $32205, and $32550 shall be furnished in the tanaested condition with subsequent straightening permitted ‘Tie annealing treatment of $31803 and 532550 shall consist of, heating the material (0 a temperature of 1900°F [1040°C] ‘minimum for an appropriate time followed by water quenching, ‘or rapid cooling by other means, The annealing treatment for 832205 shall consist of heating the material to a temperature of -900°F [1040°C} minimum for an appropriate time followed bby water quenching. {4.2.2 $32950 shall be annealed by heating the material to a temperature of 1825°F [995°C] to 1875°F [1025°C] for an appropriate time followed by water quenching or rapid coolin by other means, 4.2.3. $32750 shall he annealed by heating the material to a temperature of 1880°F [105°C] to 2060°F {125°C} for an appropriate time followed by water quenching oF rapid cooling by other means, Subsequent straightening shall be permitted. ‘424 $32760 shall be annealed by heating the material to a temperature of 2010°F [100°C] to 2085°F [1140°C] for an appropriate time followed by water quenching of rapid cooling, by oiler means. 4.2.5 $39277 shall be annealed by heating the material to 1940°F [1060°C} to 2060°F [125°C] for an appropriate time followed by water quenching or rapid cooling by other means, Subsequent straightening shall be permitted. 43 Ferritic Grades—Fervitic graves shall be annealed to meet the requirements of the Mechanical Property Require iments table. 44 Martensitic Grades: 44.1 All grades of martensitic steels shall be supplied in ib A 479/4 479M either the annealed condition or in the tempered condition as 4.4.2 Types 403 and 410 tempered material shall be held at specified by the purchaser (see 3.1.3).
