Henry's description
Henry is my classmate. He's from Sandown, a small town on the Isle of Wight. He's tall
and thin. He's got short, straight, red hair and enormous blue eyes. He's got lots of
freckles and a big smile.
He's very shy and quiet. I've never talked to him, but I hope we will talk soon, because
he's fun and friendly. He's really messy, but it's ok, nobody is perfect! He's also very
generous, he often shares his school material with Violet and others. He's very good
friends with Violet, who's very friendly too. He looks calm, but he gets very nervous
when he has to talk in front of the classroom or when Ms.Nelson asks him a question.
I like Henry, he looks like a very nice boy!

At Henry's school, they're preparing a play to perform before their winter break.
Everybody is very excited, but, there's a little problem: they can't find anyone to
perform the main character in the play, the super-hero!
Ms. Nelson has prepared a casting in her classroom to find a superhero for the play.
33
MS. NELSON: Good morning, children! Today, I have an important
message for you. Tomorrow, we'll be having an audition to find the main
character for our famous school play. Here's the script for the superhero
role, which is the character we're missing. Practise it for tomorrow!
HENRY: You say that because you're more confident than me. I'm very shy
and much quieter than you. Also, I'm super boring and ugly, how am I
going to be a superhero?
VIOLET: Well, you practise the script for tomorrow and we'll see what
happens.
MS. NELSON: Hello, everyone! Are you ready? Let's start with the
auditions. Peter, could you start, please?
34
VIOLET: Here... I am! I'm... here to... open ... save the... school...?
MS. NELSON: Oh, no, no, no! Violet, we need someone who is more hard-
working, who can learn the text on time for the play. Next, please.
Sally, it's your turn!
MS. NELSON: Thank you, Sally, but we're looking for someone who
sounds friendlier. You're very serious! Our superhero isn't a conventional
one. He's fun and friendly. Henry, I think it's only you left. It's your turn.
HENRY: Oh, well, I'm here now! I think I can help you save the
world.
MS. NELSON: Oh, Henry! What a surprise! You sound friendlier than Sally,
more hard-working than Violet and more humble than Peter. You're
perfect for the role! We've got our superhero, congratulations, Henry!
You're going to be the star in "New Year's Eve Nightmare", this year's
school play.

Heroes
Heroes in Literature and
Films
In this lesson, you’re going to read a text about different heroes in books and
films. We will also review how to describe and compare two people and talk
about their abilities.
Heroes are one of the most typical characters in literature and films.
60
When we talk about heroes, we think of superpowers and fantastic abilities.
Those are the modern fictional heroes. The truth is that heroes were already
present in ancient cultures and their myths and stories.
What's a hero?
A hero or heroine is a character who is brave, courageous and can sacrifice him
or herself to help others. They're noble and generous.
Hercules is a hero from the Greek classical mythology. He's strong and brave. His
several adventures have been represented in art, books and different films.
What's a superhero?
Superheroes usually have to fight against supervillains who are their enemies.
Sometimes, these enemies become as important as the superhero as in the case
of Batman's enemy, The Joker; or Lex Luthor as Superman's archenemy.
A typical antihero would be Don Quijote, from Cervantes' novel "El Quijote".
He isn't strong and he hasn't got great talents, but he wants to promote justice
and help others.
Another example of antihero could be Greg, from the book "Diary of a Wimpy
kid". He's shy and lazy, but he manages to be successful despite not having any
social skills nor special talents or qualities.
Superhero facts
Did you know that the Hulk wasn't green at first? He was grey, but they changed
the colour because grey didn't look good on paper.
Did you know that Wonder Woman was first a clay girl made by her mum? Then
the Greek Gods brought her to life.
Did you know that Michael Jackson wanted to buy Marvel (the famous comic
company) because he wanted to play Spiderman?

My favourite comic book character is Superman. He's from Kansas, in the USA.
He's tall and thin. He's got short, black hair and brown eyes. He's very strong and
fast. He's generous, hard-working and tidy. He looks boring, but he's fun and
interesting.
He can fly, see through objects and he's got super hearing and super breath.
He's almost unstoppable. He's only got one weakness, he becomes weak and
helpless when exposed to kryptonite.
He loves doing exercise and reading, but he doesn't like watching TV.

3. Pre-writing: Complete the following mind map with the information about your
character. You don't need to write sentences on this document, only your
ideas.
69
4. Now, write a description of your hero, making complete sentences and using
the information from the mind map.
5. Once you have a description, prepare how you're going to introduce your hero
to the class. You can make a slide show or just use a drawing or online created
