Topic Title: Using context clues (synonym and antonym) to find meaning of unfamiliar word.

Hello there! It is another exciting day to be with you today because we learn about
using context clues (synonym and antonym) to find meaning of unfamiliar word.

Synonym is a word with the same or similar meaning of the given word. Now as
opposed to a synonym, an antonym is a word whose meaning is exactly opposite of
the given word.

Take a look at these examples

Synonyms
loyal-faithful inflame-burn
sharp-slick intelligent-brilliant
abundant-plenty appeal- attract
large-big present-gift
difficult-hard mistake-error
Antonyms
arrive-depart beginning-end
black-white bitter-sweet
far-near fear-courage
big-small beautiful-ugly
bore-amuse below-above

Context clues are words around the difficult word in a sentence that mean the same or
similar for synonym and opposite meaning for antonym.

Example:

Jeff was reluctant to take the job of captain of the team. He was afraid that the time
it would take would hurt his grades. On the other hand, Billy was eager for the
chance to be the team captain.

Written by: JEMMA S. BOOK

3

In this sentence, the words “on the other hand” and “eager” tell us that Billy feels
opposite of Jeff, therefore, reluctant means uncertain or cautious. So, uncertain or
cautious is the synonym of the word reluctant while eager is the antonym.
In context clues, it gives hints to help you define a difficult or unusual word. The
clue may appear within the same sentence as the word to which it refers or it may
follow in the next sentence. Synonyms and antonyms are only two of the common kind
of context clues.
Through context clues, you can easily identify the meaning of unfamiliar words
and tell if it is synonyms or antonyms

Another example of context clues using synonym. “Reducing cholesterol has a

number of beneficial results. One positive outcome is reducing the risk of heart
disease.”
Based on this sentence, beneficial and positive are words that has similar meaning
therefore it’s a synonym. These words are used in a sentence as context clues so that
you can easily identify its meaning.

In the sentence, “I despise liver, but I adore steak.” the words but I adore contradicts
with I despise, therefore despise and adore are antonyms because they mean opposite.

SAQ-1: We can tell the meaning of the words by its synonyms or antonyms.
