Bite of the Crocodile God

A Hunters of Alexandria Demo Scenario

By Guy Milner
This is a scenario designed to showcase Hunters of Alexandria from D101
Games. It should take between 30-45 minutes to play through, depending on the
number of players and how swiftly they move through the scenes.
This scenario uses the four pre-made characters in the starting book. Manetho
and Ovidius are the easiest for the demo as the most action-oriented characters,
and then Pelagon and Lucilla.

If you’re short of time…

Start play at Scene 2 – you have just found the information you were looking for
about the murders in the Library when you catch sight of a shadowy figure in the
darkness.

If you’ve more time…

You can extend the scenario by having the characters track the remaining cultists
to their base in an abandoned warehouse in the mercantile district where they can
fight the remaining clan.

1
Scene 1: The Temple of ISIS
Explain the premise of the game; the characters are Venatores, monster hunters
employed by the city to investigate strange goings-on in Alexandria. Show them
the city map on the back of the book. Hand out fate point tokens (for this
adventure, the GM should get 1-2 fate points per player, depending on your time
constraints- more will make for a longer game) and sets of fate dice. Give a brief
introduction to how to spend fate points on a +2 or reroll by tagging an aspect,
and that they can be compelled by you as a GM. Point out the temple on the
map; explain the following to the characters
• They have been investigating a number of murders in the Delta quarter of
the city for several days
• All the victims have been found with large teeth marks as if mauled by a
great beast
• There have been four murders so far, with little pattern as to their location,
one each night so far
• They have come to the Temple of Isis to research the various cults
• They are in the temple’s great reading room; their research has made slow
progress, however, as the books they seek are lost amongst the stacks. They
are missing a crucial part of the research
Place the temple’s aspect Knowledge in the Right Hands on the table and explain it
can be tagged like any aspect. Ask them what they do. A few options include:

• They could try to sneak into the Temple’s secret stacks when the priests
aren’t looking. This is a Rogue check.
• They could attempt to persuade the priests to give them access to the secret
stacks. This is a Politician check.
• They can hit the books hard and use their expertise to piece together
information about the murders from their many fragmented pieces of
information. This uses Scholar.
• …or a method of their own devising.
To succeed in the research, however they plan to do it, will take an Overcome
action with difficulty 2. This should pose little problem; prompt them to spend
fate points and tag aspects if they need to, including the scene aspect.
2
The characters will learn that the murders are consistent with the Cult of Sobek,
the crocodile god. His cult has been outlawed in Alexandria; the last time such
ritual murders were committed, they were an attempt to summon the Crocodile
god.
Just as they receive this information, they see a flash of jade robes from the
corner of the reading room; they have been observed! The jade-clad figure runs
away, knocking over a stack of books to cover his escape…
Expect the players to give chase; if not, a compel would be appropriate here. If
they do not allow some brief investigation to lead to Scene 3.

Scene 2: The Streets of

Alexandria
The Cultist runs away towards the tightly-packed slums of the Delta Quarter.
The characters first need to avoid the stack of books that are collapsing in
front of them – again, this is an Overcome action with a difficulty of 2 – allow
any reasonable use of a profession, but probably Athlete or possibly Rogue or
Soldier.
Run this as a Contest with the cultist Amohse, the Cultist of Sobek.
Describe the streets as they run going from the relative prosperity of Regia to the
tightly-packed houses and warehouses of the Delta quarter. Describe merchants
plying their wares of strong-smelling spices and stinking dark back-alleys that
Amhose will drop behind – putting down Busy Market Day and Tight Alleyways
aspects for these.
This might be a good time to tell the characters that you, as GM, also have a
stack of fate points, and to use them. If the characters fail to catch Amhose,
Scene 3 proceeds as normal, except that the ambush catches them entirely
unaware – the enemies act first!

Amhose
Aspects: Fleet of Foot, Know the Delta Quarter Like the Back of My Hand,
Dirty Tricks, Blindly Confident in the Crocodile God
Professions: Athlete (2), Hunter (1), Scholar (1), Street Fighter (2)
Stress: 3

3
Scene 3: Ambushed!
The characters tackle Amhose as he leads them into a seemingly abandoned
temple in the Delta quarter. He turns around and they see him, bizarrely, breaks
out into an evil grin. The groan of moving columns fill the air, and the characters
see dark eyes watching them from the shadows, and then with a crash, a huge
crocodile fills the temple – at the same time water begins to flow into the temple
as it begins to flood.
The cultists throw daggers at the characters – start just by attacking, but they can
Create Advantage for the Avatar of Sobek if needed. Put down the Many Dark
Shadows and Flooding, Crumbling Temple aspects and remind characters they can use
them – this could be a tough fight!

Cultists (one per character)

Aspects: Blind Faith in Sobek, Strike from the Shadows
Professions: Hunter (1), Swimmer (1)
Stress: 1 each

Avatar of Sobek
Aspects: Hungry for the souls of men, Predatory God of a Death-Cult
Professions: Fighter (4), Swimmer (3), Hunter (2)
Fierce - +2 damage on a successful attack; Tough – 2 extra stress levels (already
figured in)
Stress: 5
When the characters have vanquished the Avatar and defeated the cult, explain
to them that although they may have won the fight today and put a stop to the
murders, questions remain – how had they managed to infiltrate the Temple of
Set, the greatest seat of learning in the land?
