REINFORCED CONCRETE CONSTRUCTION
Tutorial 4 Ans
• Timber formwork
• Metal formwork
• Permanent formwork
• System/Patent formwork
• Strength
• Lightness without strength reduction
• Durability without prohibitive costs
• Good and accurate finish
• Erection and dismantling times
• Ability to employ unskilled or semi-skilled labour to carry out the work
4. A main contractor wishes to use the sliding form in the casting of caissons for his
bridge projects. State the construction considerations he should consider.

5. Briefly describe the requirements essential for good panel design for timber
formwork construction.
• Squareness
If the panel is not square, the joint would not be tight, thus cement paste
may leak and cause honeycomb and reduces concrete strength.
• Alignment
If the panel is not straight, the product will have a poor appearance.
• Standard size
The panels should be designed in such a way that a large number of panels
are of similar size and shape. This will make it easy for the workers to work
and assemble.
• Ease of handling
Panels should not be too large in size such that a worker cannot handle.
• Strength
Timber framing (stud) should be spaced at about 300 to 500mm apart
(depend on structure size) to provide better strength.
• Nailing
Nailing of timber should be spaced at 150mm to 300mm apart and nailed
from plywood to timber for better grip.
6. Why timber forms are generally favoured as side forms of sliding formwork?
7. List three (3) advantage and two (2) disadvantage of using steel forms over timber
forms as the side form of sliding formwork.
Advantages:
• Lower frictional force
• Easier to clean
• Have better durability
Disadvantages:
• Steel forms are heavier than timber forms
• Difficult to assemble and repair
