Mock Test Solutions in English

Questions

1. Direction: Read the given passage carefully and answer the questions that follow. Certain words are
printed in bold to help you locate them while answering some of these.

Situated in the lap of the Himalayas, Arunachal Pradesh is a unifying abode of diverse ethnic communities
following their own distinct tongues and cultures. There are 26 major tribes and hundreds of sub-tribes
with more than 90 languages being spoken. But amidst this plurality, there is one common feature among
all the communities, that is that they are great storytellers.

Without any authorised script of their own, they preserved their stories of time in their memories and
disseminated them through word of mouth. This is how they were passed down to subsequent
generations. When they took the form of chants, the stories were narrated by shamans and rhapsodists in
social gatherings and at occasions like birth, marriage and at death ceremonies. They were didactic in
nature and were meant to teach collective beliefs.

When we talk about the literature of Arunachal Pradesh, we mean both the oral and the written. Oral
literature is a manifestation of folklore and comprises sayings, anecdotes and stories of the origin myths
as well as stories of animals and the universe, and of human beliefs and customs. Written literature
includes works of fiction, poetry, drama, short stories, in creative interaction with oral literatures. There is
an organic relationship between oral and written literature.

The twentieth century brought written literature to Arunachal Pradesh. The embrace of modern education
stirred the artistic zeal in a few fertile minds and after 1947 we began to see the writings of various
authors. They were the first generation of literary luminaries from Arunachal. Lummer Dai’s debut novel
Pharor Xile Xile (1961) could perhaps be considered the first novel of Arunachal Pradesh, written by an
Arunachali.

Given the absence of a script, writers of that period faced considerable difficulty in expressing themselves.
In those days, Assamese was the medium of instruction in schools and many chose it as their language of
writing. Crossing the linguistic bar, these first-generation writers, with their versatile and unique stories,
made an important contribution in the growth of literature in Arunachal Pradesh. Their works were

reflections of social reality. They often looked to folklore as a source for their writing. They derived unique
inspiration from orature, myth, folk belief and customs, and this finds expression in their writings.

Solutions

1. D
Sol. The passage states in the first paragraph that “there are 26 major tribes and hundreds of sub-tribes with
more than 90 languages being spoken”. This makes statement I and statement II false. The passage at
the end of first paragraph says that “one common feature among all the communities, that is that they are
great storytellers.” This makes statement III true. Thus, option D is the correct answer.
2. D
Sol. Please refer to the third paragraph in the passage. It states that “when we talk about the literature of
Arunachal Pradesh, we mean both the oral and the written. Oral literature is a manifestation of folklore and
comprises sayings, anecdotes and stories of the origin myths as well as stories of animals and the
universe, and of human beliefs and customs. Written literature includes works of fiction, poetry, drama,
short stories, in creative interaction with oral literatures. There is an organic relationship between oral and
written literature.” This makes statements I and II true while statement III false. Thus, option D is the
correct answer.
3. E
Sol. The passage in the third paragraph states that in Arunachal Pradesh, “written literature includes works of
fiction, poetry, drama, short stories”. This makes option E the correct answer.
4. A
Sol. The last paragraph of the passage states that “these first-generation writers, with their versatile and
unique stories, made an important contribution in the growth of literature in Arunachal Pradesh. Their
works were reflections of social reality”. As per passage, this makes statement A the correct answer.
5. C
Sol. The fifth passage states that “Given the absence of a script, writers of that period faced considerable
difficulty in expressing themselves. In those days, Assamese was the medium of instruction in schools and
many chose it as their language of writing.” Out of all the options, only option C is appropriate. Thus,
option C is the correct answer.
6. D
Sol. The term “anecdotes” means a short amusing or interesting story about a real incident or person. So out
of all the options, option D is the most appropriate option.
7. C
www.byjusexamprep.com

Sol. The term disseminated means “having spread throughout or spread (something, especially information)
widely”. Thus, the most appropriate option would be option C as it is opposite of spreading something.
This, option C is the correct answer.
8. A
Sol. Positively doesn't logically fit in the first blank, hence option B can be eliminated.
Option C doesn't bring out a clear meaning.
Option D, if we compare the second word then neuron which is a smaller unit fits less suitably than nerves
which also corresponds well with the other word 'brain'. Hence, option D can be eliminated.
'Only' doesn't logically fit in the first blank, hence option E can be eliminated.

The words in option A fit in grammatically and bring out a clear meaning, hence option A is the most
suitable response.
9. C
Sol. This is an easy question and can be solved by looking at the structure of the statement, which talks about
'one of something'. The rule here is that when pointing out a singular entity out of a lot, then the plural
noun is used. This means that that the second blank requires a plural noun. Out of the given options, only
option C suits this criteria and thus is the correct response.
10. A
Sol. 'Adopted' is the best suitable word with approach here. Since the word 'accelerate' has been used prior to
the blank 'development' is also appropriate.

11. D
Sol. The best way to solve this particular question is to look for well-understood phrases. Looking at the
second blank with a similar approach, we see that it is talking about starting an attack and the usual
phrase associated with it is 'launch an attack' and as only one of the available options has such option
setup. So, option D is the correct response.
12. A
Sol. The sentence implies that the subjects were not feeling hungry and thus did not have food until some time
later in the night. 'Quite' should be used in the first blank to emphasize on the fact that the subjects were
not feeling like eating anything and 'late' is suitable for the second blank because it conveys the meaning
of being later in time.
Hence, option A is the correct answer.
www.byjusexamprep.com

13. C
Sol. The correct answer is option C.

We need to place 'aimed' in the first place to complete the phrase 'aimed at' as here we need a verb.
Likewise in the third place, we need a word that matches with 'comfort' and that word is 'luxury'. Thus the
correct order would be CBA.
14. B
Sol. The correct answer is option B.

Note that the word confluence means meeting of two things. So placing it in the first position makes the
sentence more meaningful. Likewise, the correct phrase is 'champagne toast'. Thus, the correct order is
BAC.
15. D
Sol. The correct answer is option D.

Note that we can provide coverage and not amalgamation to anyone. So, we need to swap B and C to
rectify the sentence. The final sequence thus being ACB.
16. B
Sol. The correct answer is option B.
A: The sentence is in past tense hinted by the use of ‘was’ in the latter half. Thus, the
sentence should be in past tense from the beginning. So, I feel is incorrect.

C: I felt is correct but using will not makes it grammatically incorrect.

D: Cope out is incorrect. The correct phrase is cope with.

17. C
Sol. The correct answer is option C.

18. D
Sol. The correct answer is option D.

19. C
Sol. The correct answer is option C.
www.byjusexamprep.com

20. A
Sol. The correct answer is option A.
‘Stumbeld’ needs to be replaced with ‘stumbled’, meaning stepped awkwardly while walking or
running and fell or began to fall.

21. B
Sol. The correct answer is option B.
Since the sentence talks about a minstrel who is a travelling musician and singer common between the
11th and 15th centuries, the more appropriate word will be ‘wandered’. ‘Wandered’ also complements the
following phrase ‘far and wide’ to denote movement.
22. B
Sol. The error lies in the second word which is a misspelling of the word ‘holiday’.

Thus, option B is the correct answer.

23. A
Sol. The error lies in the first word. Since the sentence clearly talks about a person, ‘kernel’ needs to be
replaced by ‘colonel’.

Colonel: an officer in the army, air force, or navy, ranking between lieutenant colonel and brigadier
general.

Kernel: a whole seed grain, as of wheat or corn.

Thus, option A is the correct answer.

24. B
Sol. The article 'an' introduces the subject 'elephant'. Thus, part D is the first sentence. It is followed by A as
after the preposition 'on', Friday makes coherent sense. Now the question arises what does the elephant
survive? A collision. Thus, E follows A. What was the result of the collision is described in part B. C
provides the extra information about the driver being injured.

The correct sequence is DAEBC.

25. E
Sol. B should be followed by a part that contains a noun that can be "invented" as well as can be
www.byjusexamprep.com

described as "new". "Technology" from part C fits this so, C follows B.

Part A ends with "solve". Among the remaining options, only part E has "problems" that can be
solved. So, AE form a pair. Option E has both BC & AE. Hence, the correct answer is E.

26. A
Sol. From the given parts it is clear that the sentence should begin with part B which presents the problem. It
should be followed by part C which talks about the issues with the problem.

Since we have established that the sequence should go ‘BC…’ it is clear that option A is the correct
answer.
27. D
Sol. The error lies in the fourth part of the sentence. The preposition ‘of’ meaning belonging to needs to be
replaced by the preposition ‘from’ denoting the source of, in this case, the crowd.
Thus, option D is the correct answer.
28. B
Sol. The error lies in the second part of the statement. Rules of grammar dictates that the verb ‘make’ is
followed by a noun/pronoun (teachers) + plain infinitive (infinitive without ‘to’. Thus, the correct segment
will be ‘made the teachers receive’.
Thus, option B is the correct answer.
29. A
Sol. The error lies in the first part of the sentence. The sentence is in the past continuous tense and as such,
the correct phrase will be ‘was struggling’.
Thus, option A is the correct answer.
30. C
Sol. The error lies in the third part of the sentence. ‘To’ infinitive is always formed by the base form of the verb,
in this case ‘rest’, to be grammatically correct.
Thus, option C is the correct answer.

59 + 5× 6 = 89
www.byjusexamprep.com

89 + 6 × 7 = 131

Thus, the wrong number is 40.

37. B
Sol. The pattern of the series is:

66 − 32 = 34
34 − 16 = 18
18 − 8 = 10
10 − 4 = 6
6−2=4
4−1=3

Thus, the incorrect number is 36.

The pattern of the series is:

66 − 32 = 34
34 − 16 = 18
18 − 8 = 10
10 − 4 = 6
6−2=4
4−1=3

Thus, the incorrect number is 36.

16 + 33 = 43

43 + 42 = 59

59 + 53 = 184

184 + 62 = 220

220 + 73 = 563

Hence, the answer is option C.

40. B
Sol. Pattern of the series is:

3 + 50 = 53

53 + 100 = 153

153 + 150 = 303

303 + 200 = 503

Mock Test Solutions in Hindi

Questions

39 + 4 × 5 = 59
59 + 5× 6 = 89
www.byjusexamprep.com

89 + 6 × 7 = 131

Thus, the wrong number is 40.

38. C
Sol. The pattern of the series is:

23+ 1 = 9
33 + 1 = 28
43 + 1 = 65
53 + 1 = 126
63 + 1 = 217

Hence, the incorrect number is 60.

39. C

16 + 33 = 43

43 + 42 = 59

59 + 53 = 184

184 + 62 = 220
