5 habits of successful students
Get organized. Make a revision plan and stick to it.

Divide it up. Dividing your work into manageable

chunks and rewarding yourself when you finish each
chunk will make studying more fun.

Sleep. Don't underestimate the importance of those

eight hours of sleep every night! Getting a good night's
rest will sharpen your focus and improve your working
memory.

Manage your study space. Find a place that will

maximize your productivity. Look for places away from
the television and other distractions.

Find a study group. Sitting down with a group of

people who are learning the same things as you is a
great way to go over confusing class material or
prepare for a big test. You can quiz each other, reteach
material, and make sure that everyone is on the same
page. After all, teaching someone else is the best way
to learn.
Cambridge Mosque Visit

On 10th November we took most of our

Year 10 EP students and some EP
ambassadors to Cambridge Central
Mosque where we were lucky enough to
have a guided tour. Our tour guide, Daniel
was very knowledgeable and informative
and we learnt a lot about how the
Mosque was designed and why it was
such a necessity in Cambridge.
Because we went on a Friday we were
also lucky enough to be able to see
Jumu’ah prayer and some of our students
also participated in this. Everybody very
much enjoyed the day and we hope to
visit more places of worship soon!

change.

opportunity to attend employability
workshops with Job Centre Plus,

future and how to write CVs and job
applications.
Year 10 Core Ethics and Philosophy
Caroline W from the ‘Humanist, UK’ came into school and delivered a
short presentation on the HUMANIST worldview to all of our Year 10
students. Caroline engaged our students with the history of the
organisation including when Humanism began and exactly how a
Humanist approaches life. It was informative and some were
surprised to learn that Humanists celebrate weddings, funerals and
births in a special way too. The ceremonies have no mention of God
or religious ideas, they are personalised to celebrate the beauty of
the person and the community that surrounds them.

Caroline kindly shared her life journey with the students from her
childhood in New Zealand to her life here in the UK. We were
grateful that she made the effort to visit us in Luton and she was very
impressed with our students as we knew she would be. Caroline is
very keen to come back and share thoughts, ideas and to learn about
the many diverse religions and worldviews we are so lucky to have at
our school here at Icknield. The students asked some very mature
and challenging questions and we all enjoyed the open Q & A
session. Well done to all involved.

KS3 Book Club

I myself visit the LRC regularly and love
choosing different books to read. I wanted an
opportunity to share my favorite books with
students. As a result we set up the Book Club
where students from key stage 3 meet up with
me in the LRC for a short time on Monday
lunchtime to read together.

The book we are currently reading is one of the

LRC's most recommended 'The Boy at the Back
of the Class,' by Onjali Rauf and it is a very
enjoyable way to spend my lunchtime and I am
meeting a lot of students I don't teach. Feel free
to come along on a Monday and find out who
the boy at the back of the class is!

Story Teller and Author Visit
Cat Weatherill, Story Teller and Author, visited
Icknield High School on 11th December.

Cat is a master of the art of story-telling to both

adults and children. She is highly engaging and
our Year 7 students thoroughly enjoyed hearing
her retell an African story in an assembly.

During the day Cat also worked with several

groups of Year 7 students to help them gain
confidence with their own storytelling; it was an
exciting workshop with some thrills and screams
included.

“I really loved the author, I want to read her

horror story when it comes out” (Year 7 student)

“She was really good, she made me

scared!” (Year 7 student)
One of our students is an aspiring writer and was
granted an interview with the author. She
thoroughly enjoyed speaking to the author and Cat
certainly enjoyed sharing her experiences with our
student, so much so, she gifted a signed copy of
one of her books to our student.

"Talking to her was the

highlight of my day, if
not my week, and while
I am incredibly grateful
for the time I got, I felt
as though I could sit
opposite her in the
library for hours”
(Year 11 student)

Pastoral Rewards Events
On Tuesday 12th December, I was
delighted to invite Green Tie
pupils to a 'cinema experience' in
the school hall. The event was a
reward for pupils who have been
consistently receiving a high
number of excellent behaviour
marks. A great deal of popcorn
was eaten, washed down gallons
of soft drinks whilst the pupils enjoyed the Christmas classic, Elf. I look
forward to continuing to celebrate positive behaviour for learning as we move
in to the New Year.
Mr A Hince, Pastoral Leader Year 8

Ice on Wednesday 15th December for
