Early Concepts (1940s-1950s): The groundwork
for AI was laid in the 1940s and 1950s when
researchers began exploring the idea of creating
machines that could simulate human intelligence.
In 1943, neurophysiologist Warren McCulloch
and mathematician Walter Pitts developed a
model of an artificial neuron, which served as a
basis for future neural network research. In 1950,
computer pioneer Alan Turing proposed the
"Turing Test," a test to determine a machine's
ability to exhibit intelligent behaviour
indistinguishable from that of a human.
Dartmouth Conference and Early AI (1956-
1960s): In 1956, the Dartmouth Conference was
held, where the term "artificial intelligence" was
coined. It marked the birth of AI as a distinct

gained popularity as powerful machine learning
techniques.
In 2011, IBM's Watson defeated human
champions in the quiz show Jeopardy!
showcasing the progress of AI in natural
8
language processing and knowledge
representation.
