F: Excuse me, could you tell me if there’s a shoe store near here?
W: Sure, there are two or three. What kind of place are you looking for?
F: Well, I’m in town for a wedding this afternoon and, when I arrived at my
hotel, I realized I’d left my shoes at home! So, I’m looking for something
very elegant!
W: Oh, what a nuisance! I think your best choice would be Royal’s Shoes.
F: And where’s that?
W: OK, it’s on Grover Street. So, from here, keep going straight until you get
to the museum – you can see it from here… And when you get to the
museum, turn left.
F: Oh, yes. Sorry, did you say turn left?
W: Yes, left. Then, go up the hill and past the movie theater on your left.
Royal’s is just a little bit farther, on the other side of the street.
F: Thank you very much!
W: You’re welcome – I hope you find something suitable. And enjoy the
wedding! …
F: I really love them, but they’re just a bit too tight. Do you have them in a
larger size?
S: I’ll look for you, madam. Just a minute. I'll be right back. … I’m sorry, we
don’t have the next size in stock.
F: Oh no! These would have been perfect with the dress I’m wearing.
S: We do have a larger store on the other side of town. I could call them
and see if they have them there.
F: How far away are they?
S: About a fifteen-minute walk.
F: OK then, yes, could you call them for me, please? …
S: Yes, they do have them there.
F: Great! Can you tell me how to get there, please?
S: Yes, of course. Follow this street to the end. Then, take a right onto
Cooper Street. After that, you need to take the first left. It’s next to a
pizzeria.
F: Great, thanks very much!

D: Sorry to bother you, but could you tell me where the hospital is?
P: Yes, it’s about ten minutes by car from here. You need to drive up Castle
Hill, and turn right when you get to the traffic light.
D: So, it’s up the hill and then make a right?
P: That’s right. Then take the first left after the big traffic circle. Go straight
ahead until you see the hospital on the left.
D: And do you know if I can park there?
P: Yes, just follow the road around and you’ll find the parking lot next to
the main hospital building.

T: So, Sam, TV series or movies, which is better?
S: Oh, good question…
T: Yeah, well that’s why I asked it. So, which is it?
S: Do you know what? I still prefer watching something on a big screen. I
like sitting in the dark and, of course, having popcorn … and most of all,
I think I like the fact that it’s a special occasion – that I’ve gone out with
a friend for the evening so we can watch a movie together – instead of
just staying at home and sitting in front of the TV.
T: Okay! Well, let’s see if our first caller, Rosie, can change your mind. Hey,
Rosie!
R: Hey!
T: Nice to have you on the show. So, tell us why, in your opinion, TV series
are so much better than movies?
R: Well, for a start, Hollywood is all about big brand movies, you know,
producing sequel after sequel of successful movies and new ones based
on old movies, and so on, because they’re so much easier to sell than
original movies. TV companies, on the other hand – well, they’re much
more prepared to take a risk and give a chance to new writers who are
less well known.
T: That’s very true.
R: Also, one of the great things about TV series is how long they are. And
that extra time allows the writer to tell a story and develop the characters
fully. In a movie, you’re limited to ninety minutes or so, which just
doesn’t give the director enough time to do those things.
S: Yeah, another good point, but still…
R: And another thing: movies always have to be particular types of movies,
you know? They’re horror movies or they’re romantic comedies or
action movies or whatever, but a television series – well, it can be all
of those things combined. One episode might make you cry, the next
might be scary at the start and then really funny by the end.
T: No, you’re right, Rosie, and the proof of this is that more and more, of
course, the best writers are now working in television.
R: The best actors, too! All the most talented actors want to be on television
nowadays. Ten or so years ago, this just wasn’t the case.
T: Yeah, absolutely. Sam’s become a bit quiet, Rosie, have you noticed?
