ASSIGNMENT 1 (Performance I)

1. Take a photograph of a road vehicle (passenger car, light truck, or commercial vehicle)
and also carefully photograph one of its tires such that you can read the tire markings
in your photograph. Prepare a one-page summary of the tire showing both photographs
and your interpretation of the all of the markings visible on the tire.

2. Compare the power required to overcome the rolling resistance of a passenger car
weighing 16.25 kN and having radial-ply tires with that of the same vehicle, but having
bias-ply tries in the speed range 40–100 km/h. The variation of the coefficient of rolling
resistance of the bias-ply passenger car tire with speed is given by fr = 0.0169 + 0.19 ×
10−6 V 2 , where V is the speed of the vehicle in kilometres per hour. For the radial-
ply tire, over the speed range of interest, the coefficient of rolling resistance may be
assumed to be constant with the value fr = 0.008.
