CHRYSO CORROCRETE
MIGRATING CORROSION INHIBITING ADMIXTURE
FOR REINFORCED STRUCTURES
EXTEND THE LIFE OF CONCRETE STRUCTURE
WITH CHRYSO® CORROCRETE

What is CHRYSO® CORROCRETE ?

CHRYSO® CORROCRETE is a bipolar migrating corrosion inhibitor formulated to inhibit the corrosion
of steel in reinforced concrete.

®
CHRYSO CORROCRETE conforms ASTM C 494/C , ASTM 494M requirements for Type S, specific
performance admixtures. It also conforms ASTM G31, ASTM G109 and ASTM C1202.

Often, corroding rebar in deteriorating concrete is the cause of costly repairs, financial losses, injuries,
and other multiple issues. CHRYSO® CORROCRETE is a one stop solution for all corrosion issues in
concrete.

CHRYSO® CORROCRETE helps in extending the service life of new and existing structures by
®
proactively delaying the onset of corrosion. CHRYSO CORROCRETE helps in maintaining structural
®
integrity by eliminating the chance of corrosion. CHRYSO Corrocrete is eco-friendly product that
promotes sustainability as it helps in increasing the overall life of concrete structure.

Recommended uses :
• All types of reinforced concrete, including precast/prestressed and post-tensioned applications

• Bridge decks, marine structures, Parking garages, slabs, floors and other reinforced concrete
applications requiring corrosion protection against chlorides from de-icing salts or marine
exposure.
What are causes of corrosion in concrete structure ?

Rusting of rebars or corrosion is an electrochemical reaction in which parts of the rebar become
active “anodic” centers. Ions at these centers flow to “cathodic” centers where they react to form
rust. When this process starts, the rate of corrosion is affected by the concrete’s electrical resistivity,
moisture content, and he rate at which oxygen migrates through the concrete to the steel. Rust
formation is continuous process & it can take up to four times the volume originally occupied by the
embedded reinforcement, causing cracking and spalling of the concrete.

The concrete’s high alkalinity or pH causes a passive oxide film to form on steel rebar, protecting it
from corrosion. However, environmental factors such as carbonation, chlorides, and industrial
pollutants can lower the pH or compromise the passive oxide layer, putting reinforcing steel at
greater risk for corrosion.

Carbonation
Carbonation is the process by which carbon dioxide in the air reacts with hydroxides (such as calcium
hydroxide) in the concrete to form carbonates. This reaction significantly lowers concrete pH. When
the pH of concrete surrounding embedded reinforcing steel drops below 12, the protective oxide layer
is lost, and the corrosion process begins.

Chlorides
Chloride ions can penetrate the passive oxide film on concrete reinforcement. Once chlorides reach
a certain level in the concrete, corrosion starts. Concrete can be exposed to chlorides from several
different sources, including chloride-containing set accelerators, deicing salts, seawater, and airborne
salts

Acid Rain/Industrial Pollutants

Acids attack concrete by dissolving the cement paste and certain aggregates. They also reduce the
pH of the concrete, allowing the corrosion process to begin, similar to the carbonation process.
Pollutants such as sulfate attack the concrete by reacting with hydrated compounds in the hardened
cement paste. These reactions can lead to disintegration of the concrete, making embedded
reinforcement more susceptible to corrosive attack.

Once a concrete structure is built, it is impossible to coat the reinforcing steel with fusion-bonded
epoxy to protect it from corrosion. However CHRYSO® CARROCRETE can easily added to new
concrete Whenever CHRYSO® CARROCRETE is used in a new construction, it offers reinforcing steel
superior corrosion protection against carbonation and chloride attack thus extending the life of your
concrete structure.
How Does CHRYSO® CORROCRETE Technology Work ?

CARBON DIOXIDE

CHLORIDES SULPHATES

WATER

OXYGEN

Without use of CHRYSO® CORROCRETE

Carbon dioxide, Chloride Sulphates , Water & Oxygen are the responsible components which

causes corrosion.

CHRYSO® CORROCRETE is based on amine technology (amine alcohols and amine carboxylates).
It is classified as mixed inhibitors, affecting both anodic and cathodic portions of a corrosion cell.

CHRYSO® CORROCRETE is used as a concrete admixture. It migrate as liquid through the concrete
matrix via capillary action and migrates in a vapour phase throughout the concrete pore structure
forming a mono-molecular layer. This movement is governed by Ficks law, wherein the molecules
moves randomly throughout the matrix from areas of high concentration to low concentration.

With use of CHRYSO® CORROCRETE

CHRYSO® CORROCRETE corrosion inhibitor molecules migrate towards the steel to form a
monomolecular protective layer on steel/rebar by formation of the steel – inhibitor complexes.

When CHRYSO® CORROCRETE comes in contact with embedded metals, it has an ionic attraction
to it and forms a protective molecular layer. This film prevents corrosive elements from further
reacting with the reinforcement and also reduces existing corrosion rates, greatly extending
concrete service life.
Method of use :

®
CHRYSO CORROCRETE is used as an admixture. It is added to wet concrete mix along with
batch water during the mixing of cement, sand & aggregate, before placement or pouring into
transit mixer. It imparts corrosion protection to the embedded reinforcement. It should not be
mixed with any other admixtures prior to being introduced into the concrete mixer. The use of
®
this admixture does not require changes in normal batching procedures. CHRYSO CORROCRETE
is compatible with other CHRYSO® Products & with all types of cements and cementitious materials.
Durability and Sustainable Construction :

Sustainable construction is the prime priority for construction across the globe. While much attention
has gone to reducing cement use and minimizing power and water consumption, an often overlooked
aspect is the durability and service life of the final structure. However, this is undoubtedly one of the
key parameters influencing structural sustainability.

®
By using CHRYSO CORROCRETE in severely corrosive environments, structures will have a stronger
resistance to corrosion and therefore possess greater durability. Increased durability will mean fewer
repairs, greater structural integrity, and a longer service life, all leading to greater sustainability.
