Objective:

A debate is a contest between two teams of speakers. One of the team speaks in
favour of a motion which can be a question or a resolution. The other team speaks
against it. On the basis of the skill and ability to argue, points are awarded.
A topic or a resolution is presented to the teams but they are not given a lot of time
for preparation.
Key Points:
Each team has to list down the main points in the order in which they are
argued.
Due importance is given to vocabulary specific to the topic of argument.
Each speaker addresses the chair as ‘Madam’ or ‘Sir’ before he/she submits
an argument or makes an appeal or questions the opponent’s views or
concludes an argument.
A judge or a panel of judges awards the points on the basis of the strength of
the argument and professionalism of the teams.
Some of the formal expressions used by debaters, as they argue are:
