FREE-CUTTING CARBON STEEL

1. General Specification: Material Specification B1


excluding grain size requirement.

2. Scope: This specification covers free machining


material with 0.20% carbon maximum which may be
used in the manufacture of various small parts by screw
machine or similar method.

3. Chemistry: In general any of the standard available


free-machining SAE Grades with the following range of
composition may be used:

Carbon -------------------- .20% Max


Manganese ----------------- .30-1.60%
Phosphorus ---------------- .04-.12%
Sulphur ------------------- .08-.35%
Lead -( only in L series ) .15-.35%

4. Some steels which fall into this specification are:


SAE 1213, SAE 12L13, SAE 12L14, SAE 1215, SAE 1117.

5. The following steels, while not necessarily exact


equivalents of this base specification, can be used as
alternates.
