Societies Thandiwe Mhende
from her position last week.
A well placed source within
the new dawn government has
told The Mast that desperate
efforts were employed after
the now removed Chief
Registrar released a list of PF
office bearers as at November
9, 2023 revealing that no
changes were made to the list
following the proposed
changes by Miles Sampa, the
Matero PF member of
parliament.

allegations are made against
ourselves,” Mwiimbu said.
He said Mhende was given
a different assignment,
contrary to reports that she
was fired.
“We have decided to realign
the operations of the registrar
of societies, not necessarily
connecting it to this matter. It
has nothing to do with this
matter but it is a chain of
events of what has been going
on in the office of the registrar
of societies,” said Mwiimbu.
“I would love you to have this
document, the document
containing the names of PF
office bearers which the
registrar of societies gave to

key. So that the nation and

THE Media Liaison Committee (MLC) has urged the
state to withdraw its court application for the gold case
to be heard in camera.
MLC chairperson Ernest Chanda says if the matter
is allowed to be held in camera it will block journalists
from informing the public fully.
“We urge the government through its state advocates
to withdraw this application as it will disadvantage
independent scrutiny by the media, members of the
public, and civil society; with the media being a
mechanism of checks and balances. This scrutiny helps
ensure that all relevant facts are brought to light and
prevents any undue influence that might be exerted in
a closed-door setting,” he said in a statement
yesterday. “The MLC further believes that the gold
scandal has far-reaching implications beyond just legal
proceedings. It directly impacts the economic stability
and reputation of the nation. Citizens have a right to be
informed about any mismanagement or corruption that
could jeopardise their country’s financial well-being.”
Chanda explained that if the application is
entertained by the courts of law, it will disadvantage
the public from following the matter closely and make
informed opinions.
“The Media Liaison Committee (MLC) is deeply
concerned with the application by the state to have the
courts adjudicate and determine the gold scandal case
in camera. Meaning whatever will be discussed will be
a secret and no journalist will be allowed to cover this
case. This intention by government will not only
disadvantage the media from maximising on their
much needed revenue but also the citizens who rely on
the media for detailed, ethical and factual information
from the courts,” Chanda said. “The MLC is of the
view that the case remains public as transparency is
crucial in matters involving government actions.
Keeping it in camera could lead to suspicions of a
cover-up, thereby eroding public trust. The public has
a right to know how their resources are managed, and
a transparent legal process ensures accountability and
upholds democratic values. Additionally, a public trial
serves as a deterrent against corruption, sending a
message that wrongdoing will be exposed and dealt
with openly. This case involves a valuable national
resource, and the public has a vested interest in
understanding the details surrounding its management.

Zambia that was established

days of the 21st Century
when there were only
very few public universities
accepting very few students
on bursaries but with an
expanding population hungry
for expanded education and
the need for more educated
manpower and human
resources to meet the
expanding socio economic
needs of the society. The

Century to reform the
education system to permit
the establishment of private
universities.
Thus, this theme needs
no definition of what
“Pursuing Frontiers of
Holistic Education for
Enhancing Economic and
Social Relevance” means.
And this theme in its various
connotations has been at
the root of the foundations
of education since human
beings became conscious
of the need for education
and has been at the centre
of educational reform
debates in Zambia and the
world over: the theme of
the relevance of holistic
education for enhancing
economic and social
relevance. It does not matter
whether the debate is about
establishing or reforming
early childhood, elementary,
primary, secondary or
tertiary education: relevance
of education for economic
and social development
or other sub themes are
involved.

have the gold case heard in

national interest.
“The question is why? What
do they not want revealed
to the public? Who are they
shielding? Dear ‘the State’ -
expect these and many more of
such questions from Zambians
as this is a very high profile
case and is of great national
interest. Zambians want to
know that their wealth is safe
and also want to know who is
involved amongst the bigwigs
in ‘the State’. This request
by ‘the State’ will raise a lot
of questions and this will not
bode well for them. There is
a lot of distrust in the country
(what with all the various lies
that the nation has been told)
from the State right now. So
this move by ‘the State’ is
just going to further fuel the
information. So in camera
proceedings of a case are
held in private before a judge
where the press and the public
are not allowed to take part.
But what is so sensitive in
this issue? Who is trying to
protect who? What sensitive
information is there which
citizens cannot handle?
When this case took off,
there was a lot of excitement
from law enforcement agencies
and senior government
officials, including State House.
This was followed by a press
conference which President
Hakainde Hichilema held
where he promised Zambians
of more revelations when the
matter starts in court. It was at
this press conference where he
specifically distanced himself
and his staff from the gold
scandal and urged Zambians
to wait for court proceedings,
seeing that the matter was of
public interest.
And now the State has
applied to have the case heard
misdeeds. Politicians have
been unjustifiably shielded
from the public, with their
scandals covered up just
like that! And this has not
been done in public interest
but in the interest of those
involved who should have
been exposed in the first
place. And so we also ask,
is this case no longer in
public interest? If so, when
did it cease to be and who
declared it so? Who are
they protecting in this gold
case? Have some of the
accused promised to spill
the beans such that those
who could be connected
from the State itself are
dead scared? If this is
indeed a government of
transparency, why not let
the matter be heard in
open court? We therefore
demand that this matter
be heard in open court
because it is a high profile
case with a lot of public
interest. The public who
