Notes on the pieces:

ALLEGRO APPASSIONATO: SAINT-SAENS

A composit ion which is in every cellist's repertoire, and rightly so for its e nthusiasm
drives on from fir1t note to last.

APRES UN REVE: FAURE

This haunting me lody is so well suited to the ce llo that it is today probably heard
more often than in iu original song ver1ion,which wa s composed in 1865 to words by Bussine.

ARIOSO: BACH
Although the Arioso is now famous as a cello soiD, it began life as a piece for oboe with string
accompaniment in Bach's Cantata No.1 56. Its sinuous melodic: line is well suited to the ce llo.

ELEGIE: FAURE
This masterpiece was composed in 1883. It is a beautiful won: which shows Faur~·s great gift for
writing miniatures. The broad sweep of the main theme exploits the cello's elegiac qualities.

KOL NIDREI: BRUCH

Kol Niclrei ;s based on two Hebraic themes • one a M artfelt ~ment in the minor key, the other a
celmial melody in the major. Bnxh's lyrical writing for the ceUo is unsurpassed.

THE SWAN: SAINT-SAENS

The Swan (le Cygne) from l e Camaval des Animaux is surety t he most famous pie<:t> of
musk ~ written for the cello. For many year1 it was the only piect> from the work which
Saint-Satos woukt allow to be published separately.

SONG WITHOUT WORDS: MENDELSSOHN

This was Mende/uohn' s very last composition, a nd it is not an arrangement of
Ol"'e of the famous
Songs Without won»for piano but an original piece for ceflo and piano.

Notes on the pieces:

ALLEGRO APPASSIONATO: SAINT-SAENS

A composition which is in every cellist 's repertoire, and rtghtly so for its enthusiasm
drives on from first note to last.

APRES UN REVE: FAURE

This haunting melody is so well suited to the <ello that it is today probably heard
more oftE>n than in its original song version, whi<h was composed in 1865 to words by Bussine.

ARIOSO: BACH
Although the Arioso is now famous as a c ello solo, it bE'gan life as a piece for oboe with string
accompaniment in Bach' s Cantata No.1 56. Its sinuous melodic line is well suited to the cello.

ELEGIE: FAURE
Tt1is masterpiece was composed in 1883. It is a beautiful wo rk which shows Faure' s great g ift for
writing miniatures. The broad sweep of the main theme exploits the cello's elegiac qualities.

KOL NIDREI: BRUCH

Kol Nidrei is based on two Hebraic themes - one a heartfelt lament in the m inor key, the other a
celestial melody in the major. Bruch' s lyrical writing for the cello is unsu rpassed .

THE SWAN: SAINT-SAENS

Tt1e Swan (Le CY9ne) from Le Camaval des Anima ux: is surely the most famous piece of
musk ever written for the cello. For many years it was the only pie<e from the work which
Saint- Sa@m would allow to be publish~ separately.

SONG WITHOUT WORDS: MENDELSSOHN

This was Mendelssohn's very last composition, and it is not an arrangement of
one of the famous Songs Without Words for piano but an original piece for c ello and p iano.
Mendelssohn w as obviously drawn to the cello as he had previously written two
fine sonatas for the instru ment. If o nly he had wrine., ~ co rce"to!
