Module Lecturer and Assessor: _________________

Date: 20-06-2021 <this is the actual date you completed this part of the recording of your journal entries
and the length of the content may vary based on the time you spent during each session>

 Title of the Experiment, e.g., Design and Analysis of a Zener Shunt Regulator
 Identification of Objectives of the Assessment: e.g., <use your own words to write this up>
o Design with justification the given regulator to meet expected specifications
o Determine the efficiency of shunt regulator based on chosen design principles and verify
through simulation
o Provide a literature review of design principles. Possible solutions and justification to
observed results.
 Brief description of the Experiment: <use your own words to give a brief description to the
experiment)

 Design specifications:

o Input voltage: between 10 and 15 V

o Output voltage: nominally 5.6 V
o Load current: nominally 10 mA

Date: XX-YY-ZZZZ <this may extent to another day or two depending on the time spent per session>

<the details of the task/s you carried out during this day. The following are only a sample description –
this may vary based on the order of the tasks you carried out>

 Went through the assessment brief thoroughly and the following key areas have been identified
to do an extensive literature review.
o Principles of Voltage regulation
o Linear Regulation
o Shunt Regulator
o Zener Diode
o etc.
 Literature Review
o Principles of Voltage Regulation <Describe the principles referring to proper sources.
Ensure you use the Harvard Ref. Style to include in-text citations to above sources and
use postscripts to define the source of each in-text citation. Use Diagrams, Figures,
Tables, etc. to describe the theories in detail while numbering and captioning above
Diagrams, Figures, Tables, etc. properly. Make sure you use each of the Diagrams,
Figures, Tables, etc. to describe the theories>
o Linear Regulation <Describe the principles referring to proper sources. Ensure you use
the Harvard Ref. Style to include in-text citations to above sources. Use Diagrams,
Figures, Tables, etc. to describe the theories in detail while numbering and captioning
above Diagrams, Figures, Tables, etc. properly. Make sure you use each of the Diagrams,
Figures, Tables, etc. to describe the theories>
o Zener Diode: <Describe the operation using characteristic curves, etc.
o etc.

Date: XX-YY-ZZZZ

 Outcomes of the Literature Review: <Summarize the outcomes of the Literature Review. You
may relate these outcomes to your experiment based on the specification provided to you>
o e.g., Advantages and disadvantages of Linear Shunt Regulator
o e.g., expected efficiencies
o e.g., expected difficulties
o etc.
 Selection of the Zener Diodes: <Make sure you refer to several Datasheets of Zener diodes and
select suitable range of Zener diodes – your simulation software should have the exact same
diode models as well. Also, include relevant parts of the Datasheets here and use them to justify
why you selected them>
 Design calculation of the Series Resistance: <Ensure you include the relevant theories of the
Shunt regulator and built up the expression to calculate the series resistance. Then use the
expression to calculate the value of the resistance. Select and justify the most appropriate value
of the resistance you are going to use the experimental design. At a later time, you might want
to change this values based on some practical reason and will also be fine to record it at a later
time within this journal>

Date: XX-YY-ZZZZ

 Experiment – Zener shunt regulator <indicate whether you are doing it using practical
components or on simulation – both of these methods of experiments are compulsory for the
comparison of results>
 Circuit Diagram: <include a properly drawn circuit diagram of the experiment – use standard
symbols and naming convention, properly number and caption the diagram, label everything
properly>
 Procedure followed:
o List out the steps you followed to do the experiment <use Past Passive voice – e.g., the
resistance of the load was set to the highest possible value, the input voltage was to set
the lowest value as in the specification, etc.>
 Observations: <tabulate measurements/data properly considering the range of values given in
the specification – make sure your set of values are unique and there’s no collusion of values
with the values taken by other students. Follow standards when you enter values to the table
with current significant figures and units>
 Calculations: <Do any calculation related to the outcomes of this experiment here using the
expressions derived above. Write the steps of the calculation properly. Identify the final
answers>
Date: XX-YY-ZZZZ

 Graphs: <Plot the graphs following the guidelines given in the assessment brief and include them
here>
 Answer the questions: <Use the graph to answer the questions in the assessment brief>

Date: XX-YY-ZZZZ

 Repetition of the experiment for the highest input voltage: <Repeat the above procedure
following the guidelines given in the assessment brief>

Date: XX-YY-ZZZZ

 Further Analysis: <You may have to further analyse the data to come up with answers to the
questions given in the assessment brief, e.g., calculation of efficiencies. Tabulate the values of
efficiencies considering the input and output power for different combinations of input voltages
while keeping the output voltage/current around the nominal value (for this you may have to fix
the load resistance at a constant value>
 Repeat and compare these efficiency values for both the practical and simulated results.
 Discussion: <discuss any strengths and weaknesses, improvements, things you learnt,
improvisation here>
 Conclusion: <conclude your work here. Discuss achievement of the set objectives one by one
here. Identify whether this was a successful experiment or not, etc.>
 ________________________________________________________________________

<Be strongly advised that you have to record all the important observations/results in this Journal so
that they will come in handy when you write up your final report.

Also note that, this is individual work and there can’t be any collusion which will be tested by the
Turnitin system.

Repeat the same steps for Lab 2, Lab 3, and Lab 4 as well.

Managing your time to carry out these experiments are vitally important and always have a plan to do
this successfully>
