Prompt: Who is the smartest of the three little pigs?

Joseph Jacobs’ famous children’s book, The Three Little Pigs, tells the tale

of three pigs who build three houses of different materials. A Big Bad Wolf wants

to eat the pigs and attempts to blow down their houses. He is successful in

eating the first and second pigs who made their houses of straw and sticks

respectively, but is unable to destroy the third pig’s house, made of bricks. The

third little pig is clearly the smartest of the three little pigs.

The Big Bad Wolf is unable to eat the third little pig because he made his

house of bricks. After eating the first two little pigs, the Big Bad Wolf approached

the third pig’s house of bricks and tried to blow it down. According to the
author, “He huffed and he puffed, but the house of bricks did not fall down”

(Jacobs 10). This fact demonstrates that the third little pig did not get eaten by

the Big Bad Wolf because the wolf could not get to the third little pig.

Undoubtedly, the third little pig is the smartest because his life is spared because

he built his house of bricks which one cannot blow down.

Furthermore, the third little pig outsmarts the Big Bad Wolf on three more

occasions. The Big Bad Wolf makes three more attempts to eat the third little pig

by pretending to be his friend and inviting him to various events. The author

states that the Big Bad Wolf invited the third little pig to a field to pick turnips, to

a tree to pick apples, and to a country fair. The third little pig duped the Big Bad

Wolf everytime by going earlier than the time the wolf told him to get there,

foiling the wolf, and getting back to his house of bricks before the wolf could eat

him (Jacobs 12-15). This evidence proves that the third little pig is far smarter

than the Big Bad Wolf. It also proves that the third little pig is the most intelligent

of the three pigs because he cheated death multiple times whereas the other

two were eaten right away.

In conclusion, the third little pig’s wit surpasses the other two little pigs’
without question. By building a house of bricks and tricking the Big Bad Wolf

three more additional times, the third little pig is able to go on and live a happy

pig life while the other two little pigs sadly met their demise. If readers ever find

themself in a similar situation, they should take a lesson from the third little pig

and be one step ahead of their attacker.
