Environmental Engineering
Dr. Diaa Hamdy (PUA)
Environmental Science The study of the processes in water, air, and soil and organisms which lead to pollution or environmental damage, and the scientific basis for the establishment of a standard which can be considered acceptably clean, safe and healthy for human beings and the natural ecosystem.

The Origins of Environmental Engineering (History)
Very little change was seen from the
fall of Rome until the 19th century, where improvements saw increasing efforts focused on public health.

The Origins of Environmental Engineering (History)
Modern environmental engineering began in London in the
mid-19th century when Joseph Bazalgette designed the first major sewerage system following the Great Stink. The city's sewer system conveyed raw sewage to the River Thames, which also supplied the majority of the city's
drinking water, leading to an outbreak of cholera. The
introduction of drinking water treatment and sewage Joseph Bazalgette
treatment in industrialized countries reduced waterborne
diseases from leading causes of death to rarities. Dr. Diaa Hamdy (PUA) Figure 3: An English caricature of the nineteenth century shows “Cholera” rowing along the polluted river Thames amid sewage and dead rats (1858).

Environmental Engineering Today
The cleanliness of streams, for the benefit of the
stream itself, has become a driving force, and legislation has been passed addressing our desire for a clean environment. The protection of wildlife habitat, the preservation of species, and the health of ecosystems have become valid objectives for the spending of resources. Figure 4: Environmental protection

The Importance of the Environmental Engineer Environmental engineers today play a crucial role in carrying out this mission by providing technical expertise to assess and remediate existing contaminants and by designing new processes and disposal methods to prevent future contamination.
Environmental engineering technologies play an
important role in minimizing the impact of urban and industrial development on the natural world. Figure 4: Environmental protection

protection Technology Diaa Hamdy (PUA) Environmental Engineering on the Horizon Environmental engineers, in the future, will play a key role in realizing sustainable development. The new breed of environmental engineers entrusted with the protection of human health and the environment will deal on a cutting-edge level with the application of biological and chemical sciences, including nanotechnology, biotechnology, information technology, chemical fate and toxicity, and life cycle impact considerations. Dr. Diaa Hamdy (PUA) Environmental engineers will also gain greater understanding of industrial processes, including product design and development. Environmental engineers will use their design training to be proactive and preemptive in the development of solutions. Emerging fields such as green chemistry and green engineering.

Dr. Diaa Hamdy (PUA) Sustainable Engineering
Sustainable engineering incorporates
the development and implementation of technologically and economically viable products, processes, and systems that promote human welfare, while protecting human health and elevating the protection of the biosphere as a criterion in engineering solutions.

Part per million: is a measurement term used to describe the number of
parts of a chemical found in one million (1,000,000) parts of a gas, liquid, or solid. 1 𝑚𝑔 1 𝑚𝑔 1 𝑚𝑔 𝑙𝑖𝑡𝑒𝑟 milliliter microliter 1 𝑚𝑔 1 𝑚𝑔 1 𝑘𝑔 1𝑔 1000,000 𝑝𝑎𝑟𝑡 𝑙𝑖𝑡𝑒𝑟 m3 cm3 1 Liter → 1000 milliliter → 1000,000 microliter 1 m3 →1000 liter → 1000,000 cm3 Dr. Diaa Hamdy (PUA) Dr. Diaa Hamdy (PUA) Dilution Dilution is the process of decreasing the concentration of a solute in a solution, usually simply by mixing with more solvent like adding more water to a solution. To dilute a solution means to add more solvent without the addition of more solute.
Dr. Diaa Hamdy (PUA)
Dilution Ratio For example, to make a 1:10 dilution of a 1M NaCl (Sodium chloride) solution, you would mix one "part" of the 1M (moles) solution with nine "parts" of solvent (probably water), for a total of ten "parts." Therefore, 1:10 dilution means 1 part + 9 parts of water (or other diluent).
